The Dutch certainly have clubs, but as you say DD, they don't usually race every week or anything like it (although bizarrely our local club in the '90's - a nice, big one on the Brassemmermeer - did run mid-week club racing in addition to the occasional big multi-class weekend regatta. When you spoke to Dutch sailors and said that in UK we raced at the club every weekend, they generally thought it was a great idea!

Where they focused was on training, esp. in youth/Olympic stuff, which accounts for the high standard of a few in that country.

But yes, a nice place to visit and sail in one of those occasional regattas.

Multi class regattas are a great idea - everyone has to be singing from the same hymn sheet, though.

I'd imagine that the Bytes will be joining in with Supasofa events next season, won't they, as Hartley made boats?

Personally, I can't understand why any class with regular turnouts of less than 30 or so at opens/nationals would turn down the opportunity of piggybacking on an event such as SailFest. As well as the facilities/venues available to a smaller class (already mentioned) there's just the sheer amount of work involved by a (very) small number of volunteers to make it all happen! Instead of the hassle, stress and effort of getting all aspects arranged, you simply tell your members to enter online, then meet them in the bar with the trophies! How much easier does it have get to persuade classes to sign up?
Great venues, top class Race Officers, superb safety teams, socials and other activities.... And all arranged for you by someone else, at a sensible cost! The moon on a stick anyone?

Boots, so long as what is put on suits the class, I couldn't agree more. We have been sharing at Northampton for years, and it is exactly as you say. Whether Sailfest is the best fit, I don't know. If the organization was willing to run a "weekend special" Nationals for 1/2 a dozen or more classes, maybe away from a bank holiday weekend, I'm sure there would be a lot of small classes taking a look. Would make the on shore stuff more fun, too, with far more people around. What it would do is take away the "which classes can we ask" trouble that doing it privately has. Well worth an extra tenner on the entry fee.

Gareth Edwards' talk on nutrition certainly gave us plenty of 'food for thought'! He went to great lengths not to 'preach' at us, but his message came over loud and clear.  When you look at the work that he has done with top athletes, including Olympic sailors, then he certainly deserves to be taken seriously.
Angela and I think we have a healthy diet (including lots of fresh veg from the allotment) but now think we could go a bit further.
As possibly the oldest competitor to complete all Sailfest races, both this year and last, without too much pain, I think a serious look at diet might help me to do more.

I'm certainly finding sailing the D One much easier now I've put on another stone.... LOL

But in seriousness I know I need to drop the weight and build the strength, if only my knackered joints would let me.
the same, but different...
