Number 1: Steel screws
Number 2: Painting a wooden deck My fingers hurt from scraping old paint off all day yesterday. It infuriates me that paint should fly off in huge chunks with the slightest breath of air in some places.....whilst staying solidly stuck on in others. Next job is to remove the rusty mess from the sternpost. Did the previous owner really think, "Oh, I'm only sailing the boat for a week, so I don't care if it starts to rust. Plus I'm saving two pounds fifty." ?? |

Possibilities 1) They didn't think 2) "I'll keep them painted it will be OK" 3) "Which are the stainless screws in that jar?" 4) "Oh ****, I'm not going to drive down to that damn chandler again. I'll buy some next week these steel ones will do for now to hold it on while the glue sets" |

No4 is one I can relate to, only from here it would be a case of ordering on line and waiting for the post to arrive. I still have a rudder I made a temporary tiller for in Homebase carpark 3 years ago with some lovely rusting screws in it. And rusting angle brackets. Still sound as a pound.
I have painted decks (and the inside of a Mirror), but agree that 9 times out of 10, a tatty old deck with varnish on will look better than even new paint. |

I can certainly relate to no 4 - I nearly did it this morning. I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to track down an SS screw that had come loose, and didn't have a spare in the house, so I took out a zinc plated one, assuring myself that if I used it I'd replace in a "week or two". In fact I found the original, so I was saved from committing a crime!

Ah, the temporary fix that then sits there for 10 years. I'm now old enough (wise enough?) to recognise this situation before it happens, and stop myself.
