It would be nice to have a comment from RYA about the Youth Olympics, The licence holder of Byte and Chris Turner who implied at the Sunday presentation that they would happily continue to manufacture... if allowed by the licence owner. If the RYA supported the Youth Olympics there would be demand for boats. The class would be happy, the manufacturer would be happy and in my opinion the kids would be happy.
Oh.....and GRF could get one and he would be happy!

you might remember a poster in the Choosing a Boat thread was offered a trial in a byte c2 and a Europe. She came to my club a couple of weeks ago and tried both boats. She preferred the Europe.
If the RYA start supporting the Youth Olympics you can bet your bottom dollar more than enough people will start complaining about exactly what they complain about now: putting money into youth sailing that 'forces' kids into squads ajnd costs too much...to my mind the RYA have it right. |

the same, but different...

I wonder what "she"? would have chosen if she had seen the comparative price. The RYA are pumping money into Olympic hopefulls who will never make it to the one place in their class. Just cream a bit of that off then we can have more Olympic champions.

I was fortunate to try a 29er at Oxford recently, and must admit, I loved it. I enjoyed sailing the RS Feva and can understand why they move on and up to something else to give you the grin factor.

As someone in the 29er fleet, it was fantastic, for the second time this year we set the record for the largest non-international 29er event ever, and as someone leaving the class (due to combined weight, and no wish to compete in both major events in Scotland next year) it was awesome to race against the top guys coming through from elsewhere. Given the quality, as well as quantity in the fleet, I also disagree that juniors coming through sail them because they look cool. IMHO, the draw is the large, tactical fleet where boat speed and time in the boat are not the be all and end all.
Finally, my best (and worst) moment from the weekend was watching 2 friends of ours split from the rest of gold fleet on the last downwind in about 15th, gybe all the way downwind to keep in the same gust and move comfortably into first, probably securing top girls....only to cross the line without a hooter due to being the only boat black flagged in that race. Seb

I do understand that 29ers tick all the boxes. Great to sail as well as "cool". It is the lack of matching single handers that bothers me. I think you said you were in a boat with RWO writ big on the sail. I did look out for you but only spotted you from the upstairs bar as you came in. I watched through my binoculars as all those boats streamed round the windward mark and hauled up their kites. Quite a sight.

Why would you need a matching single hander? Give an example...

I thought that I had explained it. 29er is a brilliant youth boat. Fast sexy and appealing, that is why there were 76 of them at the inlands. The single handed youth boat promoted by the RYA is the laser in its 4.7 or radial form. The laser is a 30 year old tub with an archaic rig. A better alternative would be the C2 Byte which has an unremarkable hull but a proper modern rig. Better still would be a new light fast single hander for lighter folk but that is too much to ask. Byte is an international class with loads of boats sailed around the World by youth. It is the boat sailed in the Youth Olympics.....but not in this country because the RYA are not interested in competing.
My finger (one finger typing) is getting seriously tired now......I think I have made my point.

I think the GBR medal count from the last 3olympics tells us they are doing ok.
