You then clamp the deck to the hull using bike quick release type fasteners. You could have a 30kg hull and a 20kg deck which could be lifted separately on/off a car roof rack.
Damage the deck, replace just the deck, same with the hull skin.  Food for thought!

I read this post earlier today and it's something I've never considered...
We're all used to seeing a number of designs with different rig formats for different uses (Laser, Comet(?), one of the Topper range) but could you offer deck/cockpit layouts in the same way utilising the same hull?
I reckon that'd be quite clever...

I think by making a modular boat, it would allow you to consider different manufacturing techniques and materials, which could make a boat massively cheaper.
The rig could be mounted on a removable space frame, different designs/material dependant on the choice of rig.

The Hartley 12 has 2 places to put the mast in. I can't quite remember but I think that's modular - don't think there are two actual holes in one deck moulding which is a shame but possibly not strong enough.  Someone will correct me....

From the pictures of the 12 it does look like there's two different mast holes in the (seperate) foredeck moulding. I think the Topper Topaz (which at one point had a bewildering range of rig options) just has the one mast step?

I resurrected a boat called a Zoom once, and sold it. There 2 mast steps and 2 shroud positions so that it could be single hander without jib and double hander with.

The trouble with all this adaptableness and modularity is it more expensive than sticking a mast in a lump of plastic or even two lumps of plastic in different sizes.

The simple and very popular Mirror had two mast positions, so that it was still balanced when switching from one sail to two.

The 420 had that facility, but there were not too many built that had that facility. Perhaps in today "scarce crew" climate it should be reconsidered.

And we've got one and haven't yet sailed it - new daggerboard needed. It'll be up for sale some time soon (says she hoping he will have made the board and sorted the trailer)

I had my first planing dinghy experience in a zoom.

I remember using them for team racing at QM back in the 70's when they first came out, at least half the boats broke their daggerboards over a windy couple of days, generally when somebody was trying to right them, an obvious design fault.
