Interestingly Peaky not as much in it as you would think
According to Lasers website new main is £420 and Battens are £22.55 thats £444.55 for a roled sail
LDC price for a 300 main, £529 including battens a massive £84.45 more!!! Now look at what you get!!! Oh also LDC will do you a sail on interest free!!

Don't get me wrong, I'm not arguing that Lasers are good value, or that spares are cheap. But the price of a new, complete, Laser is less than a Solo or 300, both of which have a similar target crew weight. The 300 may (or may not) be better value, but ultimately a lot of people will find it easier to spend £4500 on a new toy than £8000, irresepective of residual values, open circuits, speed, comfort, harkenicity, etc.

£4500 buys you a Laser 'Race' Spec (whatever that is) which i actually think is pretty good value. for the same money you can only just buy a 10 year old winder Solo or a 10 year old RS300. So i actually agree with you around the value when it comes to a new boat. I have a mate that spent the best part of £9000 on a Solo, you could have two Lasers for that!!!! The Cost of the spares are just not inline with the price of a new boat. A new Laser Sail represents 10% of the boats retail price!

So that suggests a £9k solo will drop to £4.5k over ten years. That seems very good value. How will the Laser depreciate? Not worlds apart, really. But the value in a boat is (mostly) the races you can take part in, not the lump of plastic. |

More fool anyone paying £9k to fit their own solo out... that's not what a new winder costs, nor a new Boon. Seven and half gets you a boat on a trailer with covers, foil bag, carbon extension, full harken, continuous lines, choice of Selden spar, a custom colour and a laminate sail upgrade (pretty much any loft).
I'm looking at the Solo costing about £600 to a grand a year for 3 years in depreciation, after that, pretty much a flat line drop depending on how popular they remain, how well I maintain it, how hard I race it and whether I keep a decent sail on it- consumables etc That's a far cheaper boat than anything else I've owned from new and to some extent why I can be a little cavalier with the choice in colour. If I'd bought a D-One, then despite wanting a custom colour like I've got, I'd have had no choice but to really go for a white one... even then the same ones are still for sale on Apollo Duck despite their conservative appearance. At least Peaky and Ruscoe understand where I was coming from there. The laser suffers from overpriced rubbish spares (in my opinion) but the basic boat is relatively cheap to get you going. How many countries in the world have people with the necessary means to go out and buy the local equivalent of a solo or a Phantom or even a 300?
There are also thousands of second hand lasers for them to get started with while us decedent western Europeans splash needless amounts of cash on new ones. Assuming for a strange moment that I had shed a load of weight and was looking into getting a boat with plenty of fun for peanuts then I would get a laser, end of story. That is why they are still succeeding as a class because they are affordable. Not everyone can afford new but they still want a fun sail. |

Everything I say is my opinion, honest

And if I lost 20 cags I'd also have a difficult job justifying my new boat when the Lasers are offering such good fleet racing at our pond too these days.... and the cost of the spares are only a problem if you want to race on the circuit. Whilst the customer service is so appalling and the pricing policy so ridiculous from PSE, frankly there's no guilt to had from buying a training sail from LASERNUT or your spares from Rooster for the odd club race.

James, You can have virtually whatever colour you want mate. Giles Chipperfield has a clear coat carbon deck on his D1. As for the two on apolloduck. Well as long as Suntouched can sell better spec boats for less money why would you buy one froma private sale? The cheaper of the two offers a cheap entry into the class but IMO needs the upgrade wings, and by the time you spend that money you can buy our demo boat for near enough the same. Its a bit like you selling your Solo in 3 years time and not paying any attention to what the supplier can sell one for new.
As for my mates Solo, well obviously its not as clear cut as you buying a new one of Winder. My pal, bought two sails absolute top grade foils, covers, combi's and his own bespoke fit out. So i was being a bit naughty there. Residule values are very good within the class however you do see late boats sitting for sale for a while because people are not willing to understand true depreciation curves. People don't think clearly when pricing their own boat. Some people are not as level headed as you mate. Charlie on the other hand bought a Solo and fitted it out himself and PX'd it for near enough what he paid for it. We sold it on shortly after and everyone was happy! |

yep- it was a bit cheeky, hence my response re the apolloduck D1s. Yep- they're over-priced imo, but probably reflect what the owners originally paid for them when the FX was scary. And no, I wouldn't buy one when I could get a decent deal from Suntouched for not much more and have it specced to my own liking. (Frankly those wing bags seem a pointless 'luxury' to me... I'd rather put the money towards another kite - one for trashing, one for racing... buying from Suntouched would give that flexibility)
But either way when they do sell, well that's going to be quite a hit and I can't help but feel some empathy towards anyone in that position.
