Mike,
Is there any possibility that your prospective partner will want you to change to an epoxy construction?

timeintheboat of course you are right and that's why you need rules albeit relatively simple. if there aren't any how can you be sure that the one source sailmaker isn't tweaking the design without you knowing. you have to have a measureable baseline even if it is only to do the odd spot check every now and again. Even in a SMOD there needs to be rules governing the sails or similar items otherwise people will question the equipment whatever you say, just look at the Laser, the ultimate SMOD, but you need the top section from down under, the hull from wherever, etc, etc, etc. If you start with rules and publish them then people cannot question the intentions.
However in a fleet like the phantom having different cuts of sail means that a broader spectrum of helms can compete on even terms, whereas a single cut means that the weight range will narrow to an optimum. It depends whether you want to offer the boat competively to as many or keep it simple and the cost down. You can't win them all. Jim does have a point about multiple suppliers actually driving prices up. A single supplier could supply 50 suits of sails a year and knowing that buy enough materials at a suitable discount to cover it. Multiple sailmakers may only get 5 suits a year spread over several months so have to buy in each order. Much more expensive. That's why you will normally get a good discount if you team together to order at once. Edited by maxibuddah - 05 Feb 12 at 10:42pm |

Icon is Vinylester ... no plans to change. Was an option early on but the weight target was achieved relatively easily. Epoxy is great stuff ... if you need it - we do use it on Blaze but it is not needed on Icon in our opinion. The design and build specification, possibly excluding sail supplier now, has been tight and set for over 12 months now. All we have done during this period is to optimise rig set-up, that amazing dangle jib set-up and the fine-tune of control runs - does not sound much but the difference from 13 months ago is significant. Plus sail the boat hard to check out durability etc The biggest advance before that was to realise that the dangly pole jib system was so critical .. and then to balance/develop the entire rig around it. All other classes have retro-fitted them - even the N12's who started it all. We were able to follow their lead but increase the jib/main ratio .... the Icon jib is now 3.60m - and ithe jib is large enough to really take advantage. Operate it correctly and the boat flies - miss the point and fluff it and ... so the crew/jib control input is really really critical. Easy to sail ... but needs technique and finesse to sail fast. Thanks All !
Starting any new class is tough - even for the biggest out there however good the boat itself. Devoti involvement will do a tremendous amount to endorse and promote Icon and we are absolutely delighted. There will be more related news in due course and we look forward to working closely with them. Mike L. |

I suppose it must have taken a lot of devoti(c)on to make the deal!

does this mean you have to give russ a boat now?
![]() seriously though, this is an impressive endorsement of the icon's quality and potential. it's unlikely that devoti would jump in unless they could see the market. well done mike.
