I would guess and correct me if i'm wrong, but the end effect (that of water moving from below to above the foil via the tip) would be more significant on a foil which can rotate perpendicular to it's plane of action than on a fixed foil.

ps. I'm yet to be convinced there won't be any detrimental drag effects on a rotating foil tho.

Surely the foil on the daggerboard has got a trim tab so it can't so easily accomodate the curly ends?

Its to reduce wing tip vorticies - the water commig from the end of the foil down to the "middle" and gnarling up the entire flow of water - thus drag.

Dont know why its not on the daggerboard - and surely oval section tip would be just as this as its relativly low speeds (compared to a plane wing or speed boat hydrofoils).

Sames been tried on the big Tris at the top of their square top sails, as the fat head square top sails arent actually very efficient! Still working out and developing - isnt technology great................................

I was under the impression that wing tip vortices cause a loss of lift at the wingtip but have very little effect as you move down the length of the foil and have no effect at all once you reach mid-span....

Mikes winglets should reduce lift-induced drag a little but they are generaly used to take advantage of the flow produced by the wing tip vortices and produce a little extra forward thrust.
