I'm considering another boat (a singlehanded) for fun sailing and a little low key handicap racing. Winning is not the primary consideration (I have been racing my Spice for the last few years
so, with the manufacturers chosen PY winning is always unlikely). Weight is a consideration along with ease of sailing (I am a moderately fit 63 year old with a fair bit of dinghy experience) and to that end I have devised a crude way of weighing my Spice. All up sailing weight plus the trolly I'm getting a weight of around 160kg. Published hull weight is the same as the RS400 at 85kg, both boats were/are built by White Formula, have similar sail area and tin rigs so an estimated sailing weight of 130kg seems plausible as it matches the RS400s published 129kg closely enough. So my question is :- how do the manufacturers quoted hull weights compare with the actual weight of the boats? RS quote 'hull without fittings' for the RS100 but 'hull weight' for the others, most don't quote 'sailing weights' or specify whether 'hull weight' includes foils etc. Realistically I'd like a boat that is easier on my dodgy back up and down the beach and if funds were unlimited I'd just buy an RS Aero 7 (and before anybody suggests a laser my legs are far to short to make sailing one a pleasant experience)

There is usually a tolerance on SMOD boats but rarely are individual hulls weighed.
I know the early Giles built Supernovas had a very wide range against the published weight. Even the venerable Laser had a reasonable wide tolerance. Thankfully QC seems a bit better with more recent boats or for boats that have a min hull weight (which have to be weighed so lead can be put in). What are you considering in terms of class? People may have more information if you name a class you are looking at.

don't worry Sam, longer legs don't make it a pleasant one either. |

Quoted weights can be very unreliable indeed... and some manufacturers had a record of struggling to meet them. I wouldn't expect hull weight to include foils for any class. All else being equal the smaller the boat the lighter its likely to be. The Streaker is one of the lighter traditional classes for very much that reason.
The best thing I did was to treat myself to an aluminium trolley: that thing is wonderful. |

Could you stretch to a Solution? They can be had cheaper than an Aero, are quite light and about as manageable up and down the beach as you can get without going down the Aero route. The handicap is there or thereabouts, not as tough as it was, but not quite as favorable as a Laser but if you're wiley you can beat them on fresh water. It's sub 50kgs and has a centreboard feels a lot lighter than a laser, on or off the trolley I'm about similar to you age and condition wise and I've found it a delightful boat to use.
Oh and in answer to your question it's 'they don't they generally lie or exagerate in extreme.' Edited by iGRF - 22 Aug 16 at 3:36pm |

There is a lot of bullsh*t and lies published by some manufacturers about hull weights.
Classes with measurement certificates can be trusted because they get weighed. No one weighs a SMOD when they buy them and in some cases are getting mugged off.

Topper Spice... So you've been trapeze helming?
You'd like a light boat. So you'd do well to look at a - Farr 3.7 single handed trapeze (option of assy kite). HULL WEIGHT: 50kg. Talk to Butler Boats in Hull. www.butlerboats.biz this is how they go: http://www.uk3-7class.org/video.html |

If have experience and technique established but you're getting older, dodgy back and / or no longer want to bust a gut hiking, then a light and kindly trapeze boat is not an unreasonable option to at least consider. Possibly also a Blaze Fire.

I have a 'not-so-light' trapeze boat in my Spice, I do sail it solo in lighter winds too, but I suspect the usual suspects would be a bit to lively for me. I'm 75kg and 5'6" BTW.
I don't plan to sell the Spice and two boats may not be possible (in which case this becomes just a kite flying exercise until I decide to move on) but, realistically, I'm thinking of a singlehanded hiker without a kite (I do helm from the wire but I wouldn't claim to be more than moderately competent) The 3.7 looks a great boat, I've fancied on since I first hear about them but I don't want a wooden boat and a CF/FRP 3.7 will, I suspect, be way out of budget (if such a boat exists). Devoti D-Zero, RS Aero and Hadron H2 are also too rich ATM so that leaves the likes of RS Vario, Blaze, Solution or one of the 'Laser clones'
