Aha!
Id heard about this before but hadent seen any evidence. What was the performance like compared to the standard blaze? doesnt look like it adds much sail area but it does wonders for efficiency on boats like the IC. |

We have several owners experimenting with the rig - but no overall conclusions. The jib one here is self tacking and on certain angles is VERY fast. The spinnaker is again interesting and very fast but is also 'unofficial'. Having viewed a few of the efforts it confirms just how effective the standard 10m rig is anyway around most courses and in most conditions. The likely class outcome is - no change. Upwind the extra weight of a wet spinni and all the gear does reduce the performance and the added complexity and cost of either could reduce the appeal for some as well. Simplicity is not a bad thing - and the Blaze is very far from being slow. However if individuals want to add sails and race under a revised handicap at club level there's no harm being done.
It's always possible to make boats faster with extra sails or excess sail area, but that does not always make them 'better' or more popular overall. The Blaze is a relatively simple boat to sail, albeit a bit harder to get 100% of the performance out of it, but it does mean a wider appeal and a tendancy towards larger fleets - bit like the Laser or Phantom, Solo etc then. But if you sail locally and really want a spinni for local club racing, and still have the ability to remove the gear for class racing why not ... Blaze 720 |

The chap sails at my club.
Watched him sail it the other day when there was a bit of breeze about. Rapid on a reach. Not enough leverage close hauled or control systems not allowing enough depowerability / control. So a bit feisty. Let's face it the standard rig is enough going up hill in wind. I think the kite is a much better idea. But then use all three and add a trapeze and you've got a part's bin special Swift Solo. ![]() |

As Blaze 720 has pointed out already various Blaze owners are experimenting with various modifications.
They were discussed fairly comprehensively at the last AGM and it was decided that modifying the boat would reduce the broad appeal (the Blaze carries a big weight range) and make it more difficult to sail. It was decided that experimentation and evaluation should continue but until a rig that is significantly better than the current rig is found it would be unlikely that any change will be sanctioned by the class (does not stop people playing though). I think that is correct..Blaze 720 will correct me if I am wrong. My 2p is that I joined the class for a boat that was: 1) faster than a Laser 2) easy enough to sail but difficult to master 3) offered more rewards than the Laser did It fulfilled all 3, as a member of the CA I would not want that to change. This is my opinion and does not represent the opinion of the Class though.... Paul |
