Sorry just read Wes's response to my previous mail and have a comment to make.
From a civil airline point of view, the retro-fitting has to be done very carefully. Extra weight means less range, and range tends to sell aircraft. When retro fitting a winglet the drag reduction benefits increase the available range, but if the wing structure has to be strengthened to deal with the increased wing loading and subsequent bending, then you start losing your range benefit.
The safety factors on the Discus were I assume large enough to allow for the increase wing loading from the winglet.

Anyway well done to Mike, his foils look great, just a shame there wasnt enough wind at Axbridge on New Year to get up on them and show us how fast the Axiom V4 was. I had a pants time in my 700 although I did pass the Musto Skiff who had a 2min headstart on me !!!

Ouch

just did some online research into winglets, complex is one way of putting it, but in short just build longer wings unless that is structually not feasible in which case add winglets.

NB: adding winglets actually reduces wingtip loadings the increase in weight is purely the weight of the winglet.

NB2: Winglets save fuel and increse range but genrally only in the cruise portion of flight.

NB3: From a physics perspective forget momentum it is really the same thing as inertia.  Remember your Newtonian physics, intertia is the tendency of a body to remain in it's current sate of motion unless acted on by an external force.

NB4: If anybody is actually interested in the physics behind the glider thing PM me, I'll save you the pain of not writing it here!
