This came from a discussion on shoal draft Canoe sailing on a another forum. I thought it great. Obviously one needs to translate the bird species to this side of the pond...

The trick for dealing with extensive shallows is to know your wading birds. If the bay is full of herons and spoonbills and flamingos and godwits, you can float a canoe and make progress. If all you see is 5 square miles of Red Knots and and sand pipers, not so much. Take binoculars to search for likely passages.

And if you can see birds standing and have a fixed rudder, you are in serious trouble.

not thought about birds for water depth, I normally scan colour changes and swirls.

Wave height variation and water colour always useful going round that I O Sheppy that and wading B14 birds with their noses pecking the shallows..
