But not every club has a neat sign on / off process at the club.  We launch from at least 3 different locations round the Sound to race at one club, the RO has to pick up who's "signed on" as one sails past the start box at least 50m distant.  So the rig distinction needs to be clear from that distance if the helm is using more than 1 rig during the series, if this is allowed.
IF the aero is to have 3  separate classes will it have 3 different sail insignia?

Looking at the photos they do have different sail insignias... I guess no one will be able say whether they are definitively different enough.

I fundamentally agree with you though- launching three new classes in one go is going to confuse quite a few race officers, especially those not versed in the vagaries of new class developments...

And will they really care?  We have enough issues rationalising a protest for legitimate on the water infractions.... how many times have you heard folks say, I knew xxx hit the mark but I couldn't be arsed to protest....  I know its wrong, but I still would probably never protest anyone in any sailing I do, certainly not at club level, it's just not that important.

Will any of us on here hand on heart say they'd 'raise an issue' with noticing Bob XXX used the big rig this week but he's normally on the 7... I wouldn't.   Some of you might, and you'd be right for doing it.

Is it my imagination but aren't RS re-creating the problems presented by the two (or perhaps three, depending on your point of view) sizes of RS100 rig? Unless they sell large numbers very quickly they are going to have the same arguments in the Aero Fleet as the 100s have.

don't assume that there are any 'arguments' going on in the 100 fleet, there's lot been insinuated here but not much actual controversy at the waters-edge, IMO

When I say 'arguments' I mean it in the context of civilised debate. I sail an 8.4 and having attend the Nationals and the Worlds, the startline was more harmonious without the issue of 8.4s being smothered by their larger cousins. The issue of rig swapping appears to have been resolved, at least at a Nationals level and above.

it's easy to resolve... the 10.2 is effectively dead, except for bandits changing up for light wind pond sailing ;-)

There were enough returns for the 10.4 to get a PN, so can't be that dead?

Yup. It may have trouble getting a worlds turnout, but there are plenty active round the clubs judging by the PY returns.

Yes true- I was referring to the class events where there was supposed to be 'issues'.  I was quite clear I knew of folks who pony'd up for the man's rig for local handicap racing.

The PY returns show which is more popular though...

I think we are back to the idea that in single sailed singlehanders, you hang on to as much sail upwind as you can so you can use it going back down hill. When you can bung another sail up, you don't need to do that.

'twould be quite remarkable if both were equally popular. Full rig, Radials and 4.7 Lasers aren't for example. But the big sail does appear to be sailed a lot more than its other obvious competitor, so predictions of early demise seem short on evidence.

The best decision I made when buying my 100 was not going for the 10.2 despite being pushed to have one. At 82kgs it was just right with the 8.4. Much heavier and I would have gone with the bigger sail but then I am a lot younger than most of the fleet were. I think some of the 90kg + guys were struggling with the big sail in some fairly moderate winds... I don't think the boat needs all that sail area unless you are on some little drifty puddle in the midlands.
