Difficult to generalise...

At last month's Canoe nationals we got over half of the boats built in the UK the last ten years (30ish in all by my sums) and nearly a quarter of those built in the last thirty (50ish in total), and regarded that as a decent healthy turnout. If we only had 10% of say the last ten year's new boats we'd be very badly worried.

Get that sort of percentage for a Laser nationals and it would be a bit unwieldy! I suspect it was similar in my Cherub days, although I don't think I ever did the sums.

Incidentally if my figures are correct (they're based on my observations, I don't have the actual registrations) the numbers seem to suggest the IC is at something like an all time high in terms of the number of boats being built in recent years, which is something for a CA that dates back well over a hundred years...

The 100s are also having their first World Championship in a little over a months time. It is in Lake Como.

Like most people I think a lot of people are time poor and could only do one of these events.

Now if the RS Class association had been clever this weekend should have been seeing the first World Championship being held at Hayling Island. That way there would have been a much larger fleet.

hold the inaugural worlds at a popular UK location with, what is it, 10 or so home boats + all you south coast lot less than an hour away?

but that wouldn't fit with the international playboy image now would it?

It also demonstrates how long a good decision (the box rule) takes to begin to filter through positive results in terms on fresh blood and new boats....

it's the last weekend of the school holidays, otherwise I know there would have been at least 1 more boat there, on the upside, lovely weather for a day or two at the beach in France!

Don't forget this is an Internationally sailed boat - there aren't 400 boats in the UK...

well whatever banter we throw at it on this thread, it's still the most popular sitting down kited singlehander in the UK currently... and it was good to see that there were some 10.2s still racing in the results.

Secondhand prices are dropping too which might open up the class to new people.

I see 10.2s are packing the top of the results; are they all racing of scratch now as a single fleet ... I lost the plot on what they were up to ...??

I am sitting on the fence waiting to see what happens to this 10.2 thing, I am 6ft 1 and 17 stone so the 10.2 is a must really, and I can get a nearly new RS100 for the price of a battered devoti finn. But I would like to race with lots of ppl otherwise I might get a Finn

But what will the depreciation be on a 5k RS100 vs a 5k Devoti Finn be over the next say, 3 to 6 years?

That's the real cost of ownership.
