I am just planning to get out sailing as much as I can and hopefully rekindling the interest my daughter showed last year. Might have to consider a double hander if she does....

Not really got anything much planned aside from a week in the lakes over the summer where i am planning some walking with the family.

Actually my summer plans extend as far as hoping at some point to actually trouble a boat... Having failed last year for the first time since I started sailing to go for a sail...

read the "RS Square Running System" thread for something of a second opinion on that front.

Perhaps Grumph, you are expecting a bit much to outperform a Merlin in lighter airs with your, surely clapped out four year old kite! Also the AltO kite shape is a compromise shape for sailing deep as well as apparent wind sailing and in lighter non marginal planing conditions it does pay to sail higher, again depending on tide. The Merlin has to have some good points , if only light airs running!

As RS400@C says the Merlin is a very versatile boat and the change from with gangly to without  will be messy.

Oh, don't forget Grumph, the AltO is supposed to be a simple uncomplicated boat!

You don't give up when you know you have a winner!

I think we have a winner!!!

and another great example, that it doesn't matter what the boat geek super computer churns out, good sailing is defined by those around you... the RS200 is a fantastic boat, offering versatile sailing at club, cirucit and championship level... no one gives an airborne copulation that it 'technically' would be better off with a symmetric kite, or indeed no kite at all!

I'd say it was a fantastic FLEET, and an ok boat.

If I knew which two days Summer was going to be happening on I'd make plans.
Best wishes from deep in the woods

I'd be cautious about trying that idea - there is a massive difference beween  a lightweight tapered 2.1m 'dangly' on a  3.5m jib and what you would need on an Alto to dead run the spinnaker.   I think it is possibly best to accept the Alto for what it is rather than 'wish' an extra complication on it.  You could more easily go for a conventional spinnaker in the first place and treat it like a 505 ... but that would be missing the point as well.

Not much will dead run in lighter winds like a Merlin with the Alto I'd have thought that when windier, or upwind and on many more reachy courses it would significantly faster in any event.

Tuesday evening and Saturday racing just hope we get some sun and good sw breeze.
race officering our new super sunday series, hopefully a year without constant demands for repairs to club training boats.
The start of our new club house, demolition of the old one.
Phantom Nationals including persuading Maxi to come along as with my new sail I might beet him! (not likely)
