Then when he returns to what is it he'll go into a Laser? It'll be with a new awareness of what he's dealing with, he already has all that stuff I don't, the rope and wiggle stick control, if he then gets the senses you pick up from the sort of 'hands on' no compass, no telltale use your senses only sailing you have to learn on a sailboard I'm sure he'll end up a better sailor for it..

Just a left field thought, other than that I think what you're doing with him is a good idea, all that squad system does is mess with their heads and creates a pecking order that becomes difficult to break.
That is actually a very good suggestion,  particularly as you still have the lasers for a bit of dinghy sailing when you/he want to.

What could possibly go wrong?

The trouble with OK is that they look horrid, but a couple of years ago I watched a menagerie pursuit race at Glossop in absolute survival conditions. Ist, very, very good Javelin, 2nd, OK, 3rd and 4th, Byte C2......no other finishers but lots of wreckage. The Ok never went in, it stood on its'ear but rolled back up again. Impressive.

See, I've always thought they look gorgeous.  Tough boats to sail, physically and technically demanding, I loved my old one. Cool

Especially the one that is now sat out the back! LOL

The boy had a great sail in one this morning, so we went straight down to Weymouth and bought 1915 Clap.

Pleased to hear it.  And I think your choice has been wise too...a proper class with proper racing (dad and son trips to Europe?) so no harm done to the ultimate goal....some of the comedy racing classes you were considering had the potential to do more harm than good.

Could see myself in an OK one day.

In my class, GP14s, I think it would have to be wood.

Not because I harbour a deep seated traditionalism and a love of varnishing, but because you would be hard pushed to find a competitive GRP boat and FRP boats have a good few years to go before they enter that meagre price bracket.

I have just bought a boat after a long search for something vaguely competitive I spent £1700 and all that I could find that was worth looking at was wooden.

Anyway, wooden boats just look better!
"...sitting in a bath tearing up £10 notes..." - Why did I not listen!!!

Just one final update from me.....

The boy looked fantastic out racing the OK today - and now I'm desperate to get myself one! LOL

I suspect that I'll get totally "owned" by him (I believe that's the correct Yoof-speak) when I do, as he managed 2 bullets on his 1st time out!  Nobody likes a smart-arse! LOL
