I know, add some hardwood floor for easy cleaning, a lock on the door to keep naggers out and you have successfully converted a lounge into a boat shed......or do it in your kitchen and you can replace the dining table with a boat so you can splice while you eat your take away curry because the missus "doesn't think she wants any dinner tonight" which basically translates to, i cant be arsed to cook, so you can go without as well.

Russ, I shall try arrange something with you soon if i may

Another option is Facebook, believe it or not!

In our area there are a number of "sell and seek" facebook groups where people advertise goods for sale and deal direct with buyers so there are no fees to pay.

Up here in Cumbria my wife has set up a specialist "water sports sell & seek" which has over 100 members now and has been pretty successfull so far. Be great to see a few more members, and indeed a few more similar groups springing up elsewhere.

10 years ago ebay was fantastic, when it was genuinely about people selling used goods under the auction format, but as soon as ebay decided to move it towards the commercial sector by encouraging "buy it now" sales of new goods  and hiking fees through the roof I think it's a shadow of its former self.

We should have had a new kitchen this year, but, whilst I don't own a shiny new D1, we did get 2 weeks at Minorca sailing instead!

Agree Ebay is now a place to go and buy new stuff that you can't find in the local shops (latest purchase 4 Clio wheel trims) rather than looking of true 2nd hand bargains.

Now then, my beautiful daughter wot I have just put on a plane back to Copenhagen is a fashion buyer for a major Danish store. It is important that she looks good all the time. In order to maintain her style she uses ebay. I will not bore you with the labels and shoemakers that she favours but most sellers are reluctant to post abroad.......so they end up here in substantial quantities. Those items that she wishes to keep are taken back to Denmark in a large suitcase and she leaves the remainder here for me to post when she has re sold them on ebay.

The point of mentioning all this is that if you know how to work ebay then it can work for you. A friend of mine has bought a few boats on the site and re sold them at a profit on class websites.

the problem isn't so much buying stuff on ebay, it's selling it and the sellers fees.

This is particularly true of big ticket items... there'd nothing worse than selling a bike for say £400 only to lose £40 in selling fees.  That's why a lot of folks conclude their transactions outside of ebay and de-list before the auction end date.  AIUI the 'shop sellers' don't get as penalised with their fees as joe public does... seems a bit of turnaround in purpose, where ebay used to be the online car boot sale, it's now competing head on with Amazon marketplace for 'merchants'.

Now you could argue that we all know the terms of sale, that's fine and in the main I don't have a problem with it. However if other mediums are cheaper, and a community spirit can give a similar level of assurance and confidence that eBay can, then why not look to the cheaper option to sell?

Well after opening its doors 24hrs ago the Dinghy Bits shop on FB has achieved a total memebership of 487 members, already helping a handful of people sell there unwanted kit for no fee!  So come on guys if you have got ANYTHING dinghy sailing related you dont use and would like to sell for NO FEE get it advertised.  I promise you will not be disapointed.

One thing is for sure, i think i was right in saying there was a gap in the market.
