Dougal, with respect to Mark and the Y&Y team the classified section is not great.  The days of classified sections on big websites are gone.
Just look at sites like Bikeradar, Specialist car websites etc. even our own class websites.  The easiest way to sell something is via a forum, with strict rules!

I.e. It must have a price, it must have a photo to be offered.  I have loads of old blocks and cleats, sails, foils, wetsuits, sailing gear, trapeze harnesses etc. that i would sell but ebay is not the right place, there is no proper classified section anywhere else.  Why not run a trial forum on here?  It makes sense to me.  You can pay securely through paypal  no fees for anyone and more traffic for the Y&Y website as it would soon become the number one place to sell your boat/Used gear.

my house is stuffed full of crap that I have bought from ebay, and I'm just off to Portsmouth this Wednesday to pick up another boat.  Mostly I buy decent cleats and blocks at buy it now prices, but sometimes I'll find something I need for an older boat and will pay quite a lot for something rare, including some old books.

I don't think it's worth trying to sell a decent boat on ebay; people don't expect to buy such a boat from there - perceived value and all that.  What I do see is a lot of people trying to sell miserable old sheds as 'classics' when they're not, or grossly overprice very average older dinghies.  But likewise you see a lot of such boats on apollo duck with ridiculous price tags.  Such advertisers would do well to look at ebay's completed lisitngs to get a better idea of what their boat is really worth.

I would never advise firsdt timers to buy a boat from ebay, and these days very rarely buy one myself withour going to look, or getting someone nearer to view for me - the cvrda has a good network for things like that.

A 'how to buy a used boat' article would be a really useful tool for those of us who instruct beginers who are often keen to rush out and buy a dinghy.
the same, but different...

I sold a number of merlin rocket sails on ebay last year and found it worked quite well however on a couple of conditions. You have to start with a low starting price and have no reserve and not care if it goes for a pound. I don't think that boats sell well as due to travelling distances reducing the generally small number of people interested at any point in time. Ebay is really cheap when there is only one bidder.

I am also wary of some ebay bids as they are easily manipulated by sellers. So on an item for a few hundred pounds he can bid it up himself or get friend to do it and if he is unlucky may have bought the item and have to pay the sellers fees but other times he wins by quite a margin making it beneficial overall.

Class forums in general have class specific items selling pretty well.

A complete kestrel with trailer, trolley, etc etc, plus a brand new jib and spinnaker, as yet unused.  Even taking into account the collection cost I'll be paying less than the cost of the sails.

Yep, Ebay has changed a lot.  I generally see it as a shop for new goods and some 'buy it now / best offer' stuff.

Most of my "Saved Sellers' have gone.

I recently sold some top end camera gear on Ebay at no reserve and it made low amounts.  I should have pulled the auctions.

Most of the used stuff on 'Buy it Now or Best Offer' are peeps that have bought very cheaply from mugs like me and are prepared to wait it out on and keep relisting stuff.   It's their business model and I'll not support it anymore.

Also, their selling fees are too high.

Gumtree and Preloved are growing nicely on the back of Ebay just becoming a shop.

But if you are selling on Ebay, you do get a massive amount of publicity.  So, if you are selling a high ticket item like a yacht, it is worth sticking it on ebay, I suppose, at a stupidly high reserve and linking the advert to your own private web site.   When I was brokering yachts, I saw that a lot and it was a great way of leveraging Ebay.    I guess there are probably rules against it.

But as for a spini sock, just be thankful it's gone and you were not forced to bin it.

Had some very good and bad experiances with ebay. Bought a laser launching trolley, which I had bought only to find it was not a laser launching trolley when we got it home. Gunwhale wrong size, yes that was my fault for not checking but when the bloke assures you that its for a laser and is advertised for as a laser launch trolley, you expect its the right thing. Its a shame it was brand new virtually. Ended up buying the right one off a respectable shop online having to pay out again.

But I have also  bought some great stuff off ebay, bought a radial rig for 140 pounds barely ever used and many small bits.  I bought my laser off gumtree, which I would definately use it again.

On my Mazda site there is a click for current topics. This gives you posts in date order including the for sale section. Because of this there is no need to browse.

Having recently sold a box trailer, started at £250 it went for £510 ish. The eBay fees were £50, so 10% of auction final price. No wonder people are selling elsewhere.

On another note, has anyone got a m/l trapeze harness they want to sell?
