Having just sold that RS700 sock thing on ebay, not for much but more than I managed by other methods, I'm wondering what experiences the rest of you have had, generally ebay these days is diabolical for getting anything near the value, but it did at least move and since I was under pressure to just chuck it away by you know who (She's now eyeing the VTwin with skip intent) I thought I'd ask the hive mind..

As a retailer I find it only sells on Ebay if it is dirt cheap. I've given up with selling the majority of bits through their and now focus on my website.

The market defines the price, it's an auction site so undesirable items go for pennies. Sought after stuff can often go for silly money.

hmm, you don't get the money for the bits you expect to get money for, whereas other trash just gets loads.

One of my more successful sells was a really old magic marine trapeze harness... it went for over 200 quid, but then I don't think the buyer(s) were looking at it from a POV of sailing in it.   Dead

Old wetsuits sell well too... make sure you mark it as 100% Rubber rather than 'single lined neoprene'....

Graeme, I agree.  But could it be systematic of ebay's fees of late?  I have sold loads of stuff lately, mainly bikes and bike stuff, but the fees are crippling so much so that i will try and sell any other way possible other than on eBay.  As such much of the good stuff doesn't get listed anymore and as a result the buyer base drops off.  I work in the auction industry and its a problem we have from time to time.  If the stock quality is not there people start looking elsewhere, how do you get the stock there, by offering people more and charging less.

I have seen less and less boats advertised on there over the last few years which is a shame as i used to look forward to brousing the 'Dinghy' section on Ebay.

It confirms further that we should have a classified forum thread on here like the Bikeradar one.  Where prople can sell/Buy their Dinghy related spares, Gear etc.  BE great at generating traffic to the site!

as had been said already, the market sets the price.

i friend of mine wants a lightning, as his first boat, but they are like hens teeth second hand.
he saw one on ebay, a couple of months ago. it was old, the hull was full of water, it had been unsailed for years and the mast was bent!!
he was advised, at our club, it was worth about £400.
in the end the boat when to someone else, for over £500!!!!!!!

i would not have paid over £300 for it, but the market decided it was worth nearly double that.!!

On my Mazda site there is a "for sale" site and it does well. There is a for sale section, cars and parts, a wanted section and a breakers section. I bought a leather interior recently and some alloy wheels.  It would be a good idea for us to have one.

I was going to say, you have one already here at Y&Y and to be honest that sock was on the classifieds with a link to ebay so who knows where the lead came from.

No what I was wondering about was all the bits I seem to have collected over the years, including a fine Fray Bentos pie in a tin, sent to me by a deranged admirer.
