It's true Chris - you only have to look at the Inbetweeners or even the 'dweeb look' crafted for that manufactured, x-factor teen heart-throb Harry Styles to see that not being cool, is certainly considered 'cool', or at least highly commercially marketable.
I remember the irony of sitting through the guilty secret of a Glee episode and there was the main protagonists scripted to saying that Justin Bieber sucked and was only for girls.... on Glee FFS. Yet in turn, Bieber features thus increasing his exposure, increasing original artist record sales and no doubt, increasing the likelihood of featuring on the next Glee covers album with royalties for his paymasters. So to assume that ALL kids want what a bunch of adults think is 'modern' and 'cool'- well it's deeply superficial and frankly a little naive. However there is one growing market where 'cool' is still important. apparently- and that's in Asian markets where youth culture is exploding. But their idea of cool is certainly not ours... well it isn't if you believe the kool-aid from Neil Pryde- check out 2-3 minutes in... cool eh? Edited by pondmonkey - 21 Nov 12 at 9:26am |

The World is on it's arse at the moment, there is no moral compass and without a moral compass there can be no counter culture.
Hell there are kids on scooters in the skate parks and nobodies beating them up ffs! |

Yes....and they wear elastic waisted trousers. In my day anyone without a good leather belt or braces was in for a very good pasting.

I've no objection to the Laser Radial being a youth singlehander, just like I don't mind the 420. But some people might be dying to sail something more modern looking, with different challenges, at the same levels, like the 29er, but for the antisocial... Maybe whether it is cool or not is meaningless, but we could still be losing some punters because of it.

Well done Louis! It was a great weekend! The Byte is a fantastic boat! ISAF recognised and chosen for the last and next YOG. Pity there won't be a TEAM GB Entry

In response to your comments about training in UK, we are putting as much of our resources into training in 2013 as we possible can as our members clearly want this and are not wasting money on the Dinghy Boat show. We are receiving increasing numbers of requests for information from parents wanting their kids to train in a Byte CII. This surely this is the RYAs remit not the role of a class with 60 members?

Is the dinghy show a waste of money? Without it, people assume the class association is defunct, so whilst it is possible that you don't grow because of it, it is possible to vanish without it.

Sorry I did not understand the post about putting all the Byte CII resources into training...
Surely all the class training is self funding (this is how I run it in the Laser class).

Agreed, i think not atttending the dinghy show is a grave error. You don't do it for the people in the class you do it to spread the word among those who might, maybe, be looking in your case for a singlehander for teenage son who doesn't want a radial/4.7. I doubt you get many class converts at the dinghy show, but if you get 5 people who think "hey that's a nice little boat, wonder if Tarquin fancies a go" you've got something out of it.
