Hmm with Laser EPS's still moving for around 12-1400 quid, I should be good for a years sailing and an 80% mark up, which will make a Solo the sound investment it is, I mean, at night when it's really quiet, with the window open, if you listen real carefully you can probably hear it depreciate, even above the racket your car is probably making..

yep you're definitely in 'bang for buck' territory Graeme... it certainly raises an eyebrow to a shed of a Blaze for three and a half doesn't it?

Which goes to show what is wrong with second hand (and new) dinghy prices. Too much of the cost is 'buying' an untangable benefit - the open circuit, active CA etc - goodwill. This money ends up in the hands of the builder and second hand boat seller, not in the hands of the CA who have effectively earned it and can do something useful with it. It would be far better, IMO, to value a boat at what it is worth as a sum of its parts and then pay a higher annual fee for CA membership (if CA membership is important to you).

But in most cases the CA is the boat builder and owners, even when the CA has no direct relationship with a commercial builder, it so often is a case that a/some builder(s) have invested, and by proxy, are stakeholders in that class association... it's a consortium, working together to maintain repeat custom, residual values and mutual benefit to both the end users (new and used) and manufacturer. It doesn't really exist in its own right even if shrouded with a legal entity.
The problem comes when some classes hit genuine 'after-market' status. What happens then? When a class association effectively fails as they no longer offer anything and the builder has orphaned the class- like the L5000, Boss, EPS, Concept 302, H405... Edited by pondmonkey - 20 Nov 12 at 4:46pm |

No one is forcing anyone to buy the more expensive boat - it is just the free market at work. Boats which have class racing, or are desireable for other reasons, have more people wanting to buy them, so the price stays higher than for boats that are perceived to offer little. I'm not sure why a seller should think "Nope, can't charge market value, as it isn't me who has made this boat popular". Personally, I go for the cheap as chips boats, and sometimes strike lucky. My Lightning was silly money, but it turned out that the class has an excellent CA and a great Open circuit, and as that has become more widely recognized (thanks in part to the Y&Y forum), second hand prices have risen. Thing is, I don't want to take advantage of that, as sailing the Lightning is too much fun. I hope the Minisail will also show how much fun it is, with people sailing it who talk about the boat and take it places, and so give the class a little added value, too. I'm sure the same could happen with the EPS - the EPS sailors at Whitefriars certainly think highly of the boat. |

I appreciate that that is how it often is, but it is conflating two distinct things - one product and one (ongoing) service. To some the service has nearly no value(cruisers, club racers), to others it is essential(circuit racers).
There are classes around that exist purely because they have an active class scene - the boats themselves would not sell for the best part of £10k as a standalone product in this day and age, even if, somehow, that is what they cost to produce. They would simply fail. |

What next? Once I get back into the realms of profitability and positive cash-flow, then the V 3 is on the cards, now I absolutely know where I went wrong. The new hull design is in my head, the rig system is a tad off the wall, but could solve the issue of not needing a kite and bringing to bear those interesting forces that make sailing by the lee so efficient off wind. I don't know for sure about the rig, but anyway, still lots of fun to be had further down the path for me, but in the meanwhile I shall continue to enjoy what in my mind is till the finest balanced boat with the nicest rocker I've ever sailed and am gutted that it should have been the cheapest and all that other cash I laid out was wasted...

The wings bags are not pointless mate, they stop the wings from smashing around in the bottom of the boat when travelling. A set of bags will probably last most of the boats life. They are also usefull for stowing all your covers in at a regatta. I certainly would not buy a boat without them and i dont even think we have so most owners see the benefit. If you dont have them you are stuck with bits of old carpet and tape. My days of that crap are long numbered thank god! We have a fairly decent supply of new and used kites in stock, many of the UK fleet have bought good used sails from Suntouched with their boats so they can keep a set for premier events. Me, well i just use what i am given and very thankfull i am to. I have no doubt the two boats on apolloduck will sell, but given most enquirees come through either myself, the CA or Rodney most people see the value in buying from a retailer over a private transaction
