OK, the diamond struts are spreaders of a sort, but they act differently from spreaders on the main shrouds, particularly as the mast rotates. Unlike 'conventional' spreaders, they are not aiming to push the mast back or forwards up wind, they just act to control sideways bend, or to be pedantic, bend in the direction at right angles to the boom.

The only spreaders are on the diamonds. The shrouds have no spreaders on the 600, which is what RS400atC was referring to; increasing rig tension on the 600 has a different effect to that which it has on boats that have spreaders on the shrouds.

As the 600 has no spreaders, rig tension only adds compression to the mast, increasing bend in the lower and mid sections. This will make the diamonds lose some tension, making the whole rig more flexible.
So quite different from a 'normal' rig with fixed spreaders, let alone anything with a jib luff to think about. |

the less rig tension apparently the faster it is but!!! i ahve been on flat water with next to no tension on in about 12knots and you can feel the boat dancing around the rig underneath so i go with what i feels best
i remember i was at pyfleet week at brightling sea a few years back i was sailing a fireball in the fast handicap fleet but in the afternoons had nothing really to do apart from drink so in my quest to save so beer tokens (money) i borrowed a newish blaze rigged it it was pretty lumpy and windy cranked the tension on! the owner came over and said what you doing in horror !,then he let all the tension off and said you dont need any tension i laughed went sailing and the rig was just flopping around which was weird but fast

Ah yes, obvious now you say that.
Actually, I should have known better. I rigged my Jacksnipe loose (when it was the fashion in Snipes) - gave my crew some alarming moments when the mast lurched to windward in lulls. It was very, very loose, mind!

the reason its flapping like that is because yes the rig tension is not tight bet secondly i am taking most of the rig tension on my trapeze wire as soon as i come of the wire the wind ward shroud will became tought again its just the best setting on the 600 before you go on the water you want to hook on the wire and if the windward shroud just goes floppy you know you got the rig tension right but if you you are going out in a lumpy sea then obviously you pull a little more on
