Good point.
I know what I wanted when I bought mine: Level, One-Design racing against a group of people I thought we could fit in with. The level of performance was important too, exciting but accessible to a couple who had not done much dinghy sailing for a while.
I would have bought something different if I'd thought it was a better fleet to join.
I always thought they were one of the better boats, but owning it has made me realise it is a very good boat all round.

What drives other people in their choice of boat?

That was exactly the reason we bought ours, we weren't too rusty at sailing but thought it was a bit of a "no-brainer" at the time, hence my opposition to the changes. I am now of the opinion that the numbers of the fleet doesn't really matter, it's more about the quality of the people racing in it, which would still be a plus point for the 400.

The boat plays an important factor, helps a lot justifying the time to get on the water when busy if the boat excites you.

I thought I'd just re-open this little can of worms, just noticed on apolloduck that there are 45 RS400s for sale, that can't be too healthy. I wonder if the proposals debate has damaged the class quite badly, there are also quite a high number of boats for sale on the 400 class site. To me it seems like quite a lot could be sticking. I'm saying it can't be healthy as we struggled finding a decent one less than a year ago Confused. I know quite a few people who have 400s at the moment, and even although the changes may be off the cards, are still really unhappy.

If you are selling a 400 at the moment, which boat are you moving on to just out of interest? Watch this space Jim if you think you can sell a 400 easily.....

I just did a search on Apollo Duck for RS400's and found much less than 45 for sale - less than 20 in fact.  Could be the way I searched I suppose.   Smile

I counted somewhere in the low 40s for RS400s for sail but there was also almost 30 RS200s so I wouldn't read too much into it personally.

On apolloduck i have counted 26 400's and 13 200's.  I had noticed a fair few 400's coming on to the market recently.  There have been loads more 200's registered then the 400 as well. (Is it just under 1000 400's sold and 1200 200's) So proportionately you would expect to see more 200's then 4's on the market.
However i am not really sure you can draw any conclusions from the number of boats being advertised.

Don't forget it is also end of season for a lot of people so there will be those looking to change class/upgrade for next year so I would expect to see a lot of boats for sale right now.

i see what you are saying Paul, but i am not sure that there has been an increase in some of the other classes being offered for sale.  FWIW i think there are a proportionately high number of 400's forsale atm, but not sure you can draw any conclusions from used boat volumes.  The changes are not confirmed yet, it would be interesting to see the volume of boats offered if/when the changes are adopted.

Well the only stat that makes any sense is percentage of saleable (and sailable?) boats out there...
