I did a lovely recovery yesterday of someone's brand new glasses.  Thanks goodness for those floating glasses straps.

If you do it this way the person is protected by the boat and they can either pull them self up over the beam or you can pull them up over it.

I was reminded (oops) of how easy it is to recover someone onto a B14 yesterday- carefully dip the wing and it is easy to slide on. Up, away, and chase down the only boat within striking distance.

Thank you for your kind comments on our MOB video. I was 100% real.

The bit that struck me in the episode was how much everything calmed down as soon as Katie realised her job was too  point.

A recovery at the shroud was not possible because Katie did not have the strength to haul the casualty aboard. If I had joined them the boat would have capsized to windward. The haul over the transom was very easy but yes I nearly let her slip away on the journey to the back of the boat.
Katie has not crewed since this film and I am sadly the casualty is now resting from sailing.

We came last of course but had a fantastic week end sailing a great   boat in a wonderful place. Smile

Ages since I did instructing (and my cert has expired), but I think the figure of 8 is textbook as well- unless you're going downwind, it isn't uncommon to find yourself upwind of the MOB. To be able to get down wind of them enough to be coming sloiwly upwind towards them, whilst not sailing too far away from them, the figure of 8 gives you the room to manouver and avoids gybing. This all assumes no capsize.

Very much something worth practising, as with capsize recovery. You should very rarely need to put into practice, but you'll be racing again much more quickly if you know what you're doing

yes, I've been teaching this a fair bit lately (DI pre entry coming up)  It's harder than it looks, getting the approach right is critical.  The one shown isn't standard method but is effective.  I agree the recovery over the stern is dodgy - the clip clearly shows there's a danger of sailing off without your MOB!

as Al says, well worth trying it yourself. In a 'normal' two man situation you have to let go of everything to haul your MOB back on board so you need to avoid the boat bearing away and sailing off or rounding up and capsizing on top of you, recovery at the windward shroud helps this. While the transom recovery looks nice there are many boats that won't stand that much weight in the transom, the boat will tend to bear away, and you then potentially have steerage issues with the recover-ee in about the tiller.
