Find a boat you genuinely want to sail- go and sail that- I moved from a Laser to a 49er and am getting on without too much trouble.

The plus side is, whereas I would only spend 1hr-1.5hrs at a time in the laser training by myself (I would get too bored to do more!) I spend up to 6-7hrs in the 49er! If you find a boat that you really want, you'll put the time in you need and you'll have a blast while your at it.

I'd suggest keeping going with the laser until you master it - do a few opens for a change from club racing.

Size helps if you want to get to the front consistently, but the Phantom is a nice single hander with a great gang on the circuit.

But don't ignore the 100 - I sail mine on frensham pond and RTCs is far more fun than the autumn series I did at HISC on w/l courses. And more fun than the phantom. Sorry Ian et al

If you want an asymetric without the cost, then the RS Vareo gives you that, but on small inland lake asys rarely work well for club racing as the courses are not windward/leeward.

For inland the Phantom is a great boat. The revised epoxy Supernova is, in my biased (I sail one) opinion, a brilliant boat and so much nicer and faster than a laser (which I still own). It has a brilliant inland travellers series. The Blaze can work anywhere, only downsides is there is a lot of kneeling downwind and tacks relatively slowly, but makes up for it in other ways.

The only thing I would say is the Blaze and supernova are more flexible as they work on the sea and inland whereas the phantom is easily overpowered on the sea.

If you only sail inland the phant rules with a great handicap..

Got to agree with the cm that Ollie the northern rep is one nice guy. One thing that is always obvious at phantom events is the camaraderie and friendliness and of course rounded off with a curry or pie and a pint, or two...

I'm sure that's the case in other fleets but I am biased.

If you want something that is a real challenge and you don't mind swimming then the 300 maybe for yu, very satisfying boat when you get it right though and very quick. Had one, loved it. Phantom felt very slow afterwards but if you have come straight from a laser to it then no such worries and I think y will enjoy the phantom much more than a laser once you have found out that the rig works and you can depower it pretty well certainly the lightweights are disadvantaged as they used to be when scaffolding tubes were used as masts. Just look at the results in event years and the lightweights are doing well Even if it windy.

Whichever of the boats that have been listed ends up as the one you get I'm sure that you will enjoy it and have a blast, best of luck in your decision
Everything I say is my opinion, honest

Norbas,  Yes I'm at Crosby,  we are more a winter club than summer. Very welcome to come and try, just PM me. I work one sunday in three so some notice would be great, or sometimes off midweek if you want.
On plus point, I've found the phantom fleet so welcoming and eager to give tips, I'm so pleased I moved.  Opens are such a blast, fun and friendly. to point of tips on water during racing. The NW rep is so positive and organised its a pleasure.
Better a crap day in Abersoch than any day at work.

Just what I was about to say !    I've owned / raced most of the types you might be considering over the years as well as the Blaze.   All are more than good ... depends on what does it for you.

Just did a quick google for 'blaze dinghy', the first hit is to the class association but the link gives a 404 error. I won't hold it against the class :) , but if you're anything to do with the association thought you might like to know.

As mentioned above, trying boats is always the best way.
What I do know is that some of the Phantoms sailors at my club came from Lasers and they have loved the transition. Both a Blaze and Phantom are not too far away from a Laser in terms of being accessible/easy to sail, whereas a RS300 is a lot trickier. For example one RS300 owner at our club barely used it because by his own admission it was too steep a learning curve.

Given you sail at a very small club with a presumably modest water, it does suggest that a Phantom is well suited as it is quick in the transitions and quick to accelerate, whereas I understand a Blaze sails better in windier conditions with longer legs. Phantoms are for 12+ stone people and in most cases 13+ would make it more comfortable.

Do try them all if you can.

Try whatever you like the look of ... or are offered if you can.  We all believe 'our' class is the best (which in our case is of course totally justified)  so you may not find 'your' best answer here !  Only you can make that judgement.

Good Luck ....
