oh, and as I'm sure tick(ler) will testify, anyone interested in the class would do well to watch the technical videos with Ian Bruce, which are really good.  I have been absorbing them for tips around sailing the big brother, the Megabyte:

Youth Olympics Qualification

Having also read the documentation it appears that for the Byte C2 there are just 12 places for Europeans - 6 boys and 6 girls.  It also seems that the only way to achieve qualification is to compete at one major qualification event.  I sort of see most youngsters doing this as well as sailing their usual class, rather than instead of it.  As a coach I'd be looking around to see if I had any good youngsters who will fit the age and weifht range and who like to be a bit different.  Unfortunately it seems unlikely to give the class the boost it wants.  Might help us sell her indoors' boat though.

Yep yep I quite understand how important being the correct weight for the class is, this is why I stopped sailing the Laser standard rig.

I also believe someones results do of course not directly impact into one's ability to coach.

Indeed often the more I coach the worse my results get, as I do not get the opportunity to sail myself!

However like any skill coaching does improve with practice and therefore those who do it full time do have an advantage over those who do less coaching but this is probably reflected in the price that they charge.

I think it would be wonderful if the Byte class  could have more coaching and I sure that if the training is of a high quality then there would be no need for the class to subsidize it...

Very best of luck  Smile< id="_npwlo" ="applicationpwlo" height="0">

Let me explain about Kevin Moore. He has some years ago been a very successful Byte sailor but a healthy consumption of pies has somewhat added to his girth. He is a much better sailor/ coach than his results suggest!

If anyone wished to attend a training session then Combs should be your choice when Louis Saunders and Rick Whitehouse will be in charge, both multiple Inland and National champions.

I do understand the difficulty in coaching fees (hence my book, Be Your Own Sailing Coach  Wink) and obviously I do not know what Kevin Moore charges per day (I see that he usually finishes mid fleet in the Byte opens, so I guess and it is only a guess that he is not a full time coach) but I honestly think that someone who is considering the cost of going the Youth Olympics should invest in some training before going, as it could make a large difference to their performance at the event. < id="_npwlo" ="applicationpwlo" height="0">

Jon, with respect, the class can provide training in an amateur way but cannot afford to provide the kind of coaching in which you specialize. What would be needed is something akin to the squad system. By the way, congratulations on your Radial win. This is a personal question but how heavy are you?

It could if charged an attendance fee for a decent coach... I've no idea on Jon's rates, hopefully very high given his coaching achievements this year!!! but it's perfectly feasible to get a recognised coach for a good rate without relying on the NOD 1 rib & Big Ears to steer it.
