A new rig from down-under plonked on a 17 year old, unchanged hull (which has only recently just had a rig increase/update) is all it took to see off ALL other dinghies in the Yachts & Yachting Awards 2012...

Is this really the Dinghy of the Year?  Where's the innovation in that?

If you saw the photo for the first time, you would have said it as a 49er, hardly dinghy of the year then!!!

possibly a better choice than the Nacra 17 which is recalling all the carbon masts as the crews are testing them too hard and replacing them with aluminium versions

What would you suggest though? Not exactly rich pickings year on year, and the editorial deadline always looming..

Its always been a joke, generally its who spends most advertising! Hence why last year we have the real Y&Y awards.

Dinghy of the year should not in my opinion be selected from new designs, it could be judged on so many more levels.

very true, easy win with a low-level feminist headline.

Of course deeper analysis of this 'attribute' brings up some quite disturbing discoveries for the rail-chainers and bra burners out there.... despite years of suffrage, the girls would rather sail the blokes boat with a chopped down girly rig than have a purpose designed new product like the Rebel, 900 or that pimp looking Ovington thing.

Next we'll hear Pendleton won't be using a WMS frame, she's decided to nab something out the back of Chris Hoy's shed and will paint it pink and run a girly gear ratio on it.

My new dinghy of the year 2012 was a Minisail. New to me, anyway, and for once, the only new dinghy I had in a year...

But lets face it, almost everything in the shortlist was an Olympic trials boat, and it would have been odd if the choice from that lot was one that lost, and so will never be built.

What other new, non Olympic wannabe dinghies came out in 2012?

I think it takes longer than a year to go from consideration to inclusion in this... look how long the Icon thread's been pottering away.  Is it not eligible for 2013?

I also agree with Ruscoe, 'Dinghy of the Year' is not the same thing as 'NEW Dinghy of the Year' and I could quite easily make a case for the RS Feva, Optimist, Merlin Rocket or Solo being more of a Dinghy of the Year than any of the Olympic boats... especially if you consider the actual demographic of the readership for Y&Y.

If we are looking at the Olympic boats then the Finn wins hand down- it provided the best racing at the games, the class is loaded with characters and the explosive performance of both boat and sailors on the water was truly enlightening and a stark reminder of what constitutes good racing and good sport.
