This is happening now, and of course many of us are anticipating a massive **** fight sorry, I mean deep and respectful dicussion between the proponents of board sailing and kite sailing.

Only source for news I've seen so far is the ISAF official blog at http://www.sailing.org/follow/2012-ISAF-conference-blog.php.

News thus far is that the windsurfing and kitesurfing committee approved submission 51-12 which is a strange one which suggests replacing mean and womens kitsurfing with a "team" competition in both kite surfing and wind surfing in which a team consists of one man and one woman, I think in separate races. I say bizarre because in order to get within competitor limits the events would have to be limited to 16 nations per event, which would basically make it just a rich western nations event, without all the different countries you currently see in the board events. I don't see Council voting for that in the final decision, but I expect I'm wrong.

Thanks for posting Jim, do you know what the competitor limits are out of interest?

I'm also sceptical that the mixed events will get voted through, and do the IOC have power to veto anyway?

ISTR sailing is limited to 400 competitors. That or 500 I think.

Latest news is that the Events committee is recommending going back to the RSX boards. They were very strongly in favour of the RSX against kitesurfing last time too though, so don't read too much into that.

Be aware that there's a regulation that requires a 75% majority in the Council vote to change any Olympic events this late in the game, but I *think* I see signs of some procedural stuff whereby there's a proposal for a regulation to change the regulation that requires a 75% vote, so *maybe* that regulation will be evaded...

Much political shenanigans going on in Dublin. Wonder who's going to vote the graveyard?

The proposals to re-open the debate did not receive the required 75% of votes from ISAF Council. The Events and Equipment confirmed in May 2012 stand.

Geez that's an unexpected U-Turn, I wonder how that happened, are they considering kite for 2020? WHich is what should have happened in the first place, to give it time to develop an infrastructure..

ISAF has made unprecedented decisions today. The new president of ISAF is Carlo Croce (ITA). I believe he will be an outstanding president that will move the sport forward in a way never seen before. This vision is one I've shared with him for months before, with your views. This is a day that has brought me much emotion.

With new strong leadership I hope we will ensure that all athletes have a stable platform to invest their dreams. The Windsurfing and Kiting decision was one of high difficulty. I hated being here everyday this week, but I had to fight for what I believe was best for the sport. We should not celebrate, we have been placed against an outstanding sport of Kiting and their loss is no ones gain.

The General Assembly voted and with a large majority and selected the RSX ...

windsurfer the 51% was out of all the General Assembly members even the many that abstained. This shows how strong windsurfing is worldwide, and I am so proud that the Techno and youth still have an event to dream and train for with passion I can admire.

To remove an event at such a short time is extraordinarily disappointing. My heart goes out to every kiter in the world for their exceptional display and kindness they brought to ISAF. I hope to work with you closely so that in the 2014 Olympic events decision you can be added into the Olympic program for 2020.

Amazingly shambolic process - so after all the committees spend ages working up a logical framework, then the full Council which meets every six months randomly overturns what they've come up with, then it turns out the 4 yearly get together of the "General Assembly" gets to overturn any of it all over again, any way it likes! Whether you agree or not with the final decision, it's no way to run a sport. My heart goes out to all those people trying to plan a career in "boards" of one type or another, they've been seriously mucked about by ISAF

Its pretty typical of a parliamentary democratic type approach. National government doesn't work much differently.

Whatever happened to sports have a demonstration Olympics before they joined as full events? Does that still happen?

Why does 'sailing' need a demonstration event? If kitesurfing wants to coat-tail a meal ticket off the back of ISAF, best make sure they're fully aware of quite how political ISAF is and that actually, no surprise really, they're not going to worry too much about cutting it if there's enough lobby.

The IKA needed to approach the IOC directly imho, otherwise face the same bullsh*t windsurfing's gone through trying to make it a dinghy racing alternative, rather than a sport in its own right.

The ISAF AGM is still not the final word on any changes of the Olympic Events. The IOC Program Commission must still confirm all Event changes and Rio 2016 has influence on that decision... and then the IOC Members must confirm the final decisions.

The Program Commission has rejected other International Sport proposals previously, but never any of ISAF's recommendations. The final decision deadline is three years before the Olympic Games - September 2013.

I guess the IKA could challenge and lobby directly to the IOC, but they're probably playing the diplomacy card and dodging a bullet with the light wind outlook for Rio.

well they certainly make more of it than it actually is... but of course I'm coming from the veiwpoint of a western windsurfer with a planing only, no racing thanks attitude. Personally I'd rather watch/race lasers in that lightwind... but wtf do I know???
