I am following the Finn Gold Cup in Falmouth.  The live tracking and tweets really do give a good idea of what is hapenning in real time.  Technology really has made it possible to get instant results.  Gone are the days of waiting for weeks for the Y&Y event reports.

be useful to track grf so that they can find the v-twin as it floats towards Norway upside down with him sat on the bottom if it

if I had proper internet access at work rather than my phone id probably follow it. nice to see what's happening on the water at the time its happening. good if you could hook it up to nice graphics like the ac45's.

it is working really well -

Is tracking data available in the event of a protest?

Potentially not entirely feasible (at the moment) at smaller venues due to poor broadband connections in rural area?

I wonder what the costs involved are? Seems you have to request a specific quote, I wonder what the ballpark figures for 25, 50 and 100 boat events are?

Anyway, "waiting week for the Y&Y reports" should have long been a thing of the past as it is- if you've got an on-the-ball media set up you should be getting daily reports on your class/event website ASAP after sailing and emailed to Mark to on the Y&Y website. Any delays are now wholly the fault of the class/event... but it's still nice to have that round up in the monthly magazine

Sorry!  It wasn't a dig at anyone but I do remember the days when Y&Y was, almost, the only place for good information on events with the occasional reports in the Telegraph.  Now we have the luxury of getting very up-to-date information from Y&Y online and other live sites.  It's just that even 10 years ago it would have been hard to imagine that we could follow the race as it happens. I am hoping that, in the not too distant future, that the costs involved in this technology will come down to a realistic level so that most major regattas can be covered in this way.  Maybe even Mark could host the tracking on this site???

Very impressive.  Replayed race 5.  Interesting to watch how many more changes of angle there are on Ben's boat.
And how often he gets more speed than the boat a round him.

I can see it as a fantastic training aid, and pundits review tool.  However as an alternative to a piece of glossy reporting... sorry no, I like the great words and big pictures the Finn media team already provide to sites like this and I'm happy to wait for them.  I guess as long as the quality of the other media isn't affected by 'instant technology' then fair enough, it appeals to some, so no harm in it.

If it were televised on a live stream then I'd watch it, I sat through the last AC on YouTube and enjoyed it, even though it was hardly a thrilling set of races (R2 start aside when Spithall stuck Oracle into irons), but little graphics of annotated boats reminiscent of a ZX Spectrum video game... no thanks, not as a reporting medium.

I have enjoyed following the strategies and tactics and. of course, I am interested in seeing who is doing what.  I do, however, agree that there is no substitute for good reporting and I guess that we are lucky to have Robert Deaves doing that for the FinnsClap

Yes Rodney the media output is very strong from the class.

Just to clarify, my point is not meant to be too negative, but as an outside observer, bar the obvious names, I don't know or follow the guys, so have little interest in the little icons blipping away on the screen.  Whereas the Finn class has massive appeal to many dinghy sailors and I for one can't help but look at the piccies and scan read the reports.  Same goes for the 505!

I can see this tracking has more appeal for Finn sailors who maybe can't make it, though I'm sure there's a double-edged sword, it could be a frustrating reminder of not enough sailing and too much work!

Have to say - I am super impressed with Ben's performance

6 races in and 10 points ahead of Ed (a former Gold cup winner himself)
At the moment this is not so much a regatta as a demoralisation of the opposition while giving them an education

Not yet, but if he is as successful in other branches of the sport over the next 30 years, then he would have to be considered!

There is only the Medal race for the top 10 and the final race for the rest scheduled for tomorrow and I make Ben's total 10 points, Ed's 30 and everyone else over 50.

don't think so. The live tracking's good, but I can't help but feel that the next big break through we're waiting on is minature streaming cameras- units the size of go-pros (or ATCs!) that we can watch live. At the moment the batteries and powerful enough transimmters preclude this- even for the AC series I'm pretty sure the live helmet cams are accomponied by a backpack unit, that's feeding to a largeish boat mounted unit that also broadcasts the mounted cameras.

Ainslie teased them into thinking he was going pin, spread the cluster a bit and came back for a perfect first ranker... hope he gets the header out there on the port hand side.

Hmmm work seems to block the streaming of the live feed of the tracker - so this forum is as nears as I'll get to a live commentary

Like some other things - sailing is more enjoyable when you do it with someone else
