So I'm about to break in a new wire man for the Alto of joy and I'm just compiling a list of stuff he needs to know. Now, he was a complete sail virgin until the start of this season, he's been a bit despoiled by exposure to a 470, but other than that he is an innocent ready to be trained in the 'correct' way of things.

So I'm going to sort the brand issues, like no dinghy brands other than maybe Zhik or at a push Musto (knee pads only if my Kali bike pads don't work). Spilt toe shoes from Oneil, or Atan, he's got a wetsuit I noticed, not sure what brand he got, I can always insist it's debadged if its a crap one like Magic Marine, Neil Pryde, Gul or worse..
I'll supply the industry standard Dakine Trap harness, we'll have to source a decent blonde curly wig within which will be sewn Kaenon sunnies so they don't fall off his forehead in the event of a tea bagging.

I'll suggest Optimum big yellow timer, plus a knee mount for a GPS iPhone tracker app.

Have I missed anything?

Spinlock knee pads are so much better than most dinghy crap - they actually stay in place for a start.

yes, a PFD.  Since Zhik has taken over the world, we're all calling them PFDs.

Don't say BA anymore, everyone thinks you're referring to that cheeky girl luvin', media boat punching bloke, not a lifejacket.

Which is something totally different- a piece of equipment inflated by hot air.

Just like this thread.

PFD?

We'll use impact vests..

much keweller...

Now as he won't have a windsurfers natural instinct for shifts and being stuck out there on the wire I shall expect some feedback I'm thinking of ordering up one of them electronic doobreys, what does the hive mind think of them?

Do you mean a tactic compass?  spend the 200 quid sending your crew on a course instead.....and as the bloke with the directional stick and a windsurfers natural instinct for shifts - you'll be able to call them for him.

What course?

There are courses?

For adults?

When they're on the wire, they interfere with the wind flow, crews, they're also higher up so, if they are windsurfers they can read the water, but he won't be able to do that for many years, so I figured he could read numbers of a compass...

Its not a topic I've ever had the slightest interest in, as anyone who has ever known me will attest, but I've always understood that ultimate coolness comes not from changing yourself, but by radiating an aura that leads others to understand that if you are doing it then it must be cool.

This is exemplified in a negative way on Top Gear, with the acceptance that any car currently owned by a Top gear presenter cannot qualify for a place in the cool section on their cool wall.

Very true Jim, but don't forget today's on-trend is very much tomorrow's fashion fish and chip paper.

Take for example the RS100- once a very cool boat, all of sudden it's dead, usurped by the most unlikely of candidates- yes, the Laser EPS. Now none of us saw that one coming!
