After initially favouring a comet zero or gull to teach my 8 year old son to sail in now firmly settled on a RS Feva or Q'ba.

Have sailed both in light airs but can't decide which to get and have no experience of them in more of a blow.

If the Feva, would get the S rig to start with as don't want to go scaring him with early dips.

Any experience or views gratefully received....

Hi, I would say go for the feva with the s rig. it has slightly more crew room and easier to get hold of. also when he gets more experienced he can ether sail it single handed or if he had a crew move into the xl rig with a crew. He may decide that in the future he likes racing and the feva has good racing and lots of open training, the qba does not have this.

Feva is a good choice for  adult* and child combo. As the Feva is a squad boat they are in demand and not that many secondhand.

* depends on size of adult. So have you thought of a Laser 2000?

I am an adult (6ft) and and sail with my younger brother who is a short 13 year old. The RS Feva is a great boat to helm and crew. I use the XL sails with kite as I am into racing. Bro helms the boat fine, its big enough to sail comfortably both as helm and crew.

One thing I did when I bought the boat is to fit a center tow strap from the mainsheet block to the rear tie off point which makes hiking so much more pleasurable.

The S rig is less powerful and can be sailed with just the main, however adding the jib aids with pointing.

The Q'ba is a smaller hull, its fine for one but not sailed with two people. It sails well however second hand there are not many available.
