Looking for a suit for 2012, my winter neil pryde 5mm is great but need a suit for warm conditions. I sail a contender mainly and sometimes f18 and laser so need lots of flexibility so all thoughts appreciated. Want it to look good also Wink

Been looking at;
Neil Pryde raceskin
Zhik superwarm and normal suit - Bit expensive
Rooster shin tech
Gul code zero

What are your thoughts and suggestions ?

Go to the dinghy show on the first weekend of March and try them all on. Best way to find the best fit, look at styling etc.

I sail Tornados and F18s and I can certainly recommend the Oneill wetsuits. Most comfortable suits Ive worn by far

I have 3 O'Neill suits, Shorty, Full and Steamer, all are MT in size and fit perfectly, very comfy and warm.

Badly fitting suits dont work like they should, trying it on is the only way.

if the pryde is a good fit, stick with the brand.  I use their 3mm short arm suit in the summer on colder days and a thermalite top with shorts on warm days.

excellent kit without the price tag of Zhik

That was what puts me off, i think zhik looks awesome but can they justify the price.

Anyone owned any of the named suits?

What are peoples thoughts about long john and thermo top combos as opposed to just a short arm wetsuit as standard?

I always use a Long John wetsuit. Currently I have a Gul Profile, and an older Ronstan Skiff Long John, I'm not sure either are still in production! I find them very comfortable (I prefer the Gul as it has a front zip, the Ronstan is zipless, great once it's on, but a bit of a struggle getting there). It's also very adaptable, I don't have a summer shorty. When it's hot I just add a rash vest. As it gets colder the first layer to add are Rooster polypro legs and top, then a Rooster Thermaflex top, and then a spray top, either a plain one or an furry aquafleece type one. Finally, when it really gets cold all that goes away and the drysuit comes out!

I have a Gul Code Zero - I think that its very good for skiff type sailing, really flexible neoprene good seams and ankles so not much water gets in. The perfect long john type suit, and with various options on top can cover most of the years sailing. The only reservation with it is that it doesn't have any seat reinforcement so you could trash it with sailing a laser ( I put magic marine hiking shorts on over if I do this).

Ive owned both the Zhik and NP ones and certainly IMHO wouldnt want to pay for the Zhik ones...doesnt matter how good they are comfort wise mine never lasted more than season. Prydes didnt really fit me.
For the type of sailing you do Id have the O'Neil and put rash vests or the O'neil thermo top on under. Trapezing high performance boats I personally find that too much layering gets restrictive.
As for longjohns vs short armed.... my choice short armed as it just protects the shoulders more from the sun ;)

The gul suit looks good and dont so much mind hving no protection on the behind as i only sail a laser for 1 regatta a year aha what about knee protection however, i do spend a lot of time scrambling about the boat ahah

And thank stuart O i couldnt understand why they were more expensive. But which o neil suit ?

I have the psycho II as it comes in various thickness a 5/3 and 3/2...also have a heat...the 3 I have are now over 5 years and only have small chunks out of them. They are really flexible as they are designed for surfers.

BUT I agree with what has been said before try lots on

I would have a look at RipCurl when looking for a very good wetsuit.

Especially their steamers made with the E3 neoprene.

They're expensive, but you get what you paid for : Incredible flexibility (better than anything I've tried) and great thermal comfort.

And if you're willing to sail in Alaska, they have something for you :  http://www.ripcurl.eu/?aid=1011 - http://www.ripcurl.eu/?aid=1011  ! Big smile

Zhik for me, amazing freedom of movement and build quality but expensive.
