What are your tips on using carp landing poles as TEX's?

i.e.

what diameter section?

Attaching the poles to UJ's?

What grip to use?

Do decent tackle shops chop them to the right length in the shop for you or do you have to do that yourself?

Arn't the poles really bendy? surely that could make heading up quite difficult.

Can't you just wrap more carbon round the pole or something?

I went into a local fishing shop to ask for a carp landing net handle only to be laughed at because no one fishes for carp around here.

Instead I  went to a local DIY store and baught 20 bamboo canes for £2.50 and a short length of hose to join them to the UJ's

I have had some issues with the hose/UJ comination being a bit bendy but beefed that up with a short length of sail batten and all is now spot on.

The spares even came in usefull for propping up a sun shade

Keep talking about that bamboo...  I'm assuming you're not just using one cane - how many and what strength does this give, over what length?  ish...

Carp landing net handles are real good, not to bendy, they even come
with a nice foam grip handle!

To fix them to your UJ's just cut off the metal threaded end fitting, push
in a little car filler ( P38 ) or similar having put a little parcle tape around
the UJ's and let the filler go off (so you can get the UJ out if you bust it).
Then drill a hole through and put a bolt through it with a nylock on. An
M3 / M4 should do it.

After testing about everything possible, for my cherub I bought a kite rod in carbon for about 12 £ .

They are 2meters long and 16mm diameter.

I'm sure you could find the same in UK and even if it isn't Cherub-DIY-Stylee it work well, efficiently without any splinter in the fingers ...

Red Wolf is the way forward. There 6ft long and should be available in almost any fishing tackle shop, especially the one in Welwyn Garden City. Leave the metal bit on, it adds strength to the UJ, or it just rips out like Tim and Andy's did. Then just drill a half inch hole in the bottom, stick the UJ in, and whack a bolt through.

£20 is way too expensive. Don't pay more than a tenner!

I have twin tillers so use one bamboo cane for each extention.
To fit it to the UJ I cut a 4 inch long peice of garden hose which I warmed in a cup of hot water to make it soft it then slip the bamboo in one end and the UJ in the other when the hose cooled down it contracted made a tight joint. I pulled as hard as I could but could not get them apart.
To get the best joint you should use a peice of cane that is just too big to go into the hose when it is cold. and to be on the safe side I put a self tapper into the bamboo and the UJ

The poles themselves have a bit of give in them but that is good as it means they will take more abuse before breaking, they are very light and the segments provide grip every 10 cm along the length.

I had a bit of a problem with one of them because there was a slight gap between the end of the bamboo and the uk and the hose itself started bending when I was right at the back of the boat downwind with a bit of lee helm. I did a temporary fix by taping a peice of sail batten across the hose to UJ joint. This worked well but in the long term I may put a couple of layers of glass over it.

The bamboo may not look quite as fancy as the black carp rods but they are able to take more abuse and are cheaper without being much heavier so are great for learning.
