I'm afraid you are probably right Peter.  Still, France is OK (apart from Ms Chirac).  Great sailing all over the place.

Ms Chirac??? Who's she?
It would be good if the Olympics went to France. As you said, Pierre, there's great sailing. Our friend guytoon would be over the moon, I'm sure!

Don't start BnS.  Everyone knows she's the President of France's wife.

Food's a bit iffy though, or so I've heard

That's only because you stayed with English friends, who raid Sainsbury's before crossing the Channel!
(a friend of mine went to Dordogne last year and was surprised - and deprived - because he couldn't find any Cheddar )

Advice to all: in France, it's virtually impossible to find baked beans, bacon, flavoured cheese (like the green or red-streaked stuff glowing at the cheese counter). Not easy to find prawn cocktail crisps, yukky fat sausage rolls, mint sauce for Sunday roast. Marmite is virtually unheard of, as are all the cheerful-looking fizzy drinks that get kids on a high.

Sad news, it's not easy to find a good curry, and chocolate bars are more expensive!

To counterbalance, any food you buy in France is worth a few sacrifices

Next week's column will be about wine...

BnS I was making an ironic reference to Chiracs recent comments about British food.

Advice to all, in lieu of baked beans, buy large tins of Cassoulet and add harissa to it.  A Le Mans staple when camping.

Also you can't beat Grand Marnier Crepes for breakfast. Heaven

What with all the coverage here in Sing. you would have thought we were hosting the games at the moment not just a committee meeting.  The media coverage is so intensive I can virtually tell you what each committee member was wearing, had for breakfast and where they went for dinner.

I can also categorically say that some people may or may not have made up their minds yet and the presentations today may or may not make any difference and with David Beckham attneding the presentation for London as an example of one of our most outstanding Olympic sports persons I would just like to congratulate Paris on a well deserved victory.

anyone watch the final bids this morning.. how many references to sailing were there... any offers above none?

Posted By: lozza

How many references were there to any specific sport - few, if not none.

Its not what the olympics are supposed to be about.  The games are about the athletes competing rather than the sports themselves.

I'm sorry to come as a pain in the ASE, but the Olympic bid for Paris was backed up by many more people than just the French President. As much effort went into the Paris bid as there was in the London bid. I can understand that you're trying to settle a score with the French (as a whole nation) but could you restrain your enthusiasm, please...

I know the vast majority of the good British public can't resist a good spell of Francobashing, but guys, please.... raise above that

And to show that NOT all French nationals are arrogant blinkered gits, as it's been suggested in the past, here's the only French joke I found amusing lately:

What do you get if you throw a grenade into a French kitchen?

Didn't realise lino was that popular in France.

BUt totally agree with BNS - lets keep this positive - it is fantastic news that the London bid was successful.  Time to book the campsite in Weymouth ready for the sailing...it might even tempt me back to the UK to go and watch!

Yipee! You've got another 7 years to evict your troublesome tenants!!

As for the campsite, I know a very nice place near Weymouth, with swimming-pool and a good bar .

A couple of days ago (before the announcement), the local news featured a hotel in Weymouth that was already contacted for a booking in 2012! That's what I call well-prepared

I love France but I'm glad the Olympics are here.  What is more Weymouth seems like a good venue, they have really upgraded the facilities since I was there.  I'll be there - as a spectator.

there was something in the press about ramsgate being a possible venue for the keel boats?

has anyone any idea where this came from?
