i am thinking of buying a yacht in portugal or somewhere not too far from it, has anyone any advice, it will be staying in a marina in portugal,

The RYA has a lot of info on such things, especially concerning the worth of certificates of competence on foreign registered yachts. Well worth contacting them.

I can give you the contact details of a good currency exchange broker who can save you a few percent compared with the banks.

Buying in an EU country should be OK. Buying outside raises complications with the Recreational Craft Directive.

Make sure you get documents to prove VAT has been paid, as it is not uncommon for officials to demand to see them.
