Hi there. I am based at the moment in Belgium and have been sailing a Laser off the beach for the last 2 years. I am looking at something a lot more exciting that can be sailed singlehanded but can also take the battering from the waves in the big winds.

Very shallow sand beach so hard grounding is inevitable in big winds when coming back in. The laser can take this anyone got any ideas what else is tough.

I like the look of the Moth but my feeling is it will break quickly. Cats are around everywhere but are almost all difficult singlehanded. I have been out on a few and really like the wire so a monohull that can be sailed singlehanded on a wire is perfect.

I am 6ft 2, 85kg (13 odd stone) so any thoughts would be great.

At the moment the Vortex is looking nice.

Thanks for the thoughts, I love the look of the contender but they seem to be in very short supply secondhand.

The RS700 is one I had already looked at. and there seem to be plenty around.

I might wait and see if a Nice Contender comes up.

600, MPS etc are good, but if you are worried about hitting the beach then have a look at the spirint 15 (ex dart 15) similar performance, trapeeze option, no daggerboard to distroy on the bottom, and the rudders kick up too.  Plenty of very good boats going second hand at very reasonable prices.  Not sure how much new ones are exactly but I doubt they will be more than MPS/700s are going for second hand.

Yep I'd agree with Dart 15 / Sprint 15.

Dart 15 or the 'new' Hobie 'Twixxy' - awful name but really strong twin trapeze 14ft trainer cat with spinnaker!

Easily sailed by two kids or one adult. No boards and super strong kick up Hobie rudders.

I had looked at Cats, they are everywhere but if I want them I can rent them for 35 Euros an hour.

What I really want is a monohull that is extreme, the RS700 or the Contender look like top of the heap at the moment. I am not worried about foils, daggerboards etc as this I am used to with the Laser, it is more the boat itself surfing in on the waves then being dropped on the beach that is the problem.

I have tried all sorts of landing including deliberate capsizing but the Laser still winds up being bare Fibreglass by the end of the season :-)

Bloody hell i thikn ur better off with a vision mate ! Not many performace baots will survive many drops on a pebble beach!

Sounds like you should get your self an old MX Ray. Not a trap boat but it
has a kite and goes like stink. And has similar strength properties to a
laser in the hull and foils.

Thanks for all the replies, someone at the club pointed out to me yesterday that I could get a High Performance boat for days (Like Yesterday) with a flat sea and a gentle 3 or 4 and keep the Laser for the other days when I go out with the Kiteboarders and Windsurfers in a 6 or 7 with the big waves. (Apparently they all think I am mad anyway but enjoy watching from the clubhouse)

I think what will probably happen is I will get an RS6/700 or Contender and then learn to Windsurf for the big waves days ? Be a lot easier on the Maintenance costs

We've got a few nice waves on pebbles in Lancing. Launching can be interesting...

Excellent Photo, That is exactly what it looks like here on Big Wave days

Mind you I do have Sand instead of Pebbles.

Sand is worse for the boat though - shingle rolls nicely but sand is solid stuff and hurts boats far more...

Tell BWD to stop jumping out of his boat when people are trying to launch...but it does explain his name though!

He couldn't jump out of his boat, he still hasn't got one! That ripple was produced by mightier forces than Dave, poor lamb...

That wave did hurt, and they knew it would:

Bracing himself against the inevitable!!

what's the difference between the rs600 and the contender?

For me the biggest difference is there are lots of RS600 around secondhand but very few Contenders.

This plus that fact they are both singlehanded Trapeze boats means they are exactly what I want. The RS700 looks even better but a big jump in price.

Other than that I bow to others who have actually sailed them ?

does that mean loads of people buy a rs600 realise it's rubbish and sell it to buy a contender thus eliminating their existance on the second hand market?

Nope, it certainly doesn't.

The two classes have very different performance profiles which appeal to quite different sailors - the RS600 is a modern high powered skiff, the Contender an excellent, but more traditional and stable boat.

You'll never hire anything worthy of being called a cat.

If you want a tough single handed HP cat that is easy to handle on shore, try an A Class Inter 17 or F-16.  Inter 17 and F-16 one up cat rigged and spinnaker also has the benifit of racing 2 up twin trap with kite and jib.

Those A-class Flyers from the Taipan guys are a beautiful piece of kit.  A rich bugger got one recently at our club because he was frustrated with his Taipan and wanted a bit more speed!

Probably the most efficient rig designed behind the solid wind C Class cats.

18 foot long, all carbon and weigh in at 75 kg fully rigged.  Before the minimum weight rule, boats were down to 60 kg rigged.  Despite light weight....  Very tough boats.

Also argumently the quickest one man boat in the world.

With a very strong international Class

Some A Class skylacking
