What sort of boat do you think would be suitable for a 17st bloke to take his two teenage daughters out in well ones 10 and the others 13 .I currently have a 505 which i desperately do not want to part with but I can only take them out in pretty light winds as they arent very experienced and obviously arent heavy enough.I would want to do some racing and be competetive at club level. Now at my club the main two handed fleet are RS400's and as much as i'd like to buy one I can't afford it!!!It would have to be 2 person or 1 and two smallish people dinghy preferably with spinnaker and maybee a trapeze espacially now the youngest one has started to like the idea. Was thinking 420,or maybe fireball what do you reckon ????Or should I keep the 5'oh and turn them into proper sailors.Answers on a postcard please!!!

420's are great to learn in, stable, fairly fast and give good teaching with a symetric spinnaker which you dont have to use if you dont want to. They're also dead easy to trapeze on! Or possibly a laser 2000, you can get a trapeze kit for it? Good luck in finding a boat!

or a national 12, but you probably can't get three people in a national 12 or merlin rocket sensibly! merlins are great boats though. what about an albacore or something like that?

Albacore is the definatly the answer it will carry your weight well and be an easy intro to sailing for the girls.

You are also allowed in class rules to race 3 up

Should be able to get a competitive club racer for under £1500 and they are also having there Worlds in the UK this year at Lyme regis which should be a good event.

My advice is to stick with the 505.  If the rig is set up correctly, you can easily depower the boat on the water.  The 505 is more forgiving, more stable and has that extra bit of speed to interest the youngsters.

Sheet loads shouldn't be much more than for the albacore or merlin either.

the twelve may be too tippy, you can get hold of old 420's cheap that will be competative at club level, there great boats to learn to trapeze in n all

Laser 2's are easy to pick up, easy to sail, and can be fun in a bit of wind.

Can also be sailed single handed if the kids want to stay on shore.

Being a Laser 2 sailor myself, they are great fun when theres a breeze, however they can be a bit on the small size IMO, and i think you would struggle to fit 3 people in one comfortably!!

Not many 17 stone blokes fit in a 420!

How about a Lark??  They cope well with 3 adults in...

We had four in my laser 2 once..... then 3 .... then 2 .... now only me.

OK for an adult and two (or even three) weenies, but not an adult and two teens unless you trapeze one out each side (which is fun).

Keep the 505 and fit two traps!  To hell with class legal.
