hi
i'm looking at trying to get a 49er for my 18th b'day and was wondering if anyone had any advice and a list of spec to look out for in oldish boat
i do plan on doing so of the local regatta's and maybe some national events
i think a carbon rig if well out of budget so i'm hoping to get around £3k/4k to spend on it

or should i just get a b14 or i14

In my opinion, forget the B14 and I14 and go for the 49er. It's by far and wide, one of the best boats I've sailed. I've owned an '06 14 and it didn't compare to the 9er we had before it, on a tin rig.

There is a distinctionon PY between the tin rigged boats and the carbon rigged boats, the carbon rig boats sail off 744 and the tin rigs off 750, 760 or something like that. Distinction in prizes between classes at certain events too.

I'd look at boats above sail number 700. There are a few on appolloduck for above your budget on the old rig but I'd be cheeky and see if they'd accept less, bearing in mind that they've been up for a while and it's quite hard to sell a boat without a carbon rig. Try and find a well kept boat as you will pay through the nose eventually, on up keep, for a cheaper tired boat.

Where do you sail? Is it quite swelly, because if it is, maybe a 14 would be a better idea.

yeah in the north sea it can be pretty lumpy at times
but to be honest i don't think i would be sailing it in the heavy stuff until i'm really confident in the boat and my ability and by then i will be off to uni and sailing inland
also i know there have been many upgrades over the years like wings etc how do i tell if the boats has these mods
