I'm selling an old national 12 and have been approached by a chap who wants to pay by cheque. After reading on the phantom website about a scam which worked like this I said cash only on connection. I havn't heard from him since.

BEWARE! Even Cheques that are cleared into your bank account can still fall through! This scam could leave you without a boat, and having to pay for them to take it from you!

He sent this email, in case you get one like it

Hello,

Thanks for your response but i will want you to understand that the
payment can only be made by check and is when you have the money
credited into your bank account that is when the shipping agency will
come to your place for the shipment of the goods..

If is okay by you, kindly let me have your contact details for payment...

Seen this one before, but, usually, in higher priced items like yachts, and cars....

Bit, frightening, that they are now hitting the dinghy Market....

Avoid,....

Just a shame that they can't afford to pay someone to write the email in proper English.  Kinda gives the game away...

Jon, it's been a common one for people selling the likes of laptops on fleabay for ages. As ever, when doing anything with money on the internet, tread carefully.

The other one to watch for is when they turn up to view, agree the price and offer to pay with Paypal on the spot..... They log on to "their" Paypal account with you watching to make sure all is above board, transfer the money to your account, let you check that it has cleared into your account and drive off with your boat in tow. A couple of hours later the paypal payment is listed as a fraudulent action and the money is withdrawn from your account so you have no money or boat and have no proof of who it was that took it....... It has happened to a friend selling some tools on the bay.
