Hi all. Basicly I've just decided to ditch the national 12 and get a competitive single hander. At the moment I'm thinking that an Rs300 looks like a fun route to trundle down. Are there any other classes in terms of events and prevision that are better????? Or any boats that will suit me better (I'm 6ft and 72 kilos)

THanks for your help

Bryn

Bryn, you are the perfect hight and weight for a 300.  As an ex 300 sailor i can confirm that you would not be disappointed with your purchase.  The fleet are super friendly (i never heard a protest in the 2-3 years i sailed one) They are well built and dirt cheap to run.  There is no boat of a similar type like it fast, challenging and rewarding.  They take a bit of getting used to but thats all part of the fun. In my opinion its a Superior boat to any other hiking single hander, although i must say a modern blaze looks good.

Or if you don't want to hike you'd also fit a 600 well.  Fills most of the same boxes as the 300 in terms of challenge and speed, provision of curcuit, number of boats etc.
Depends upon what sort of water you sail on really...if its a small lake i'd say hiking and then 300 or blaze - but if its a bigger lake (say 150 acres plus) then a trapeze boat really is huge amount of fun.
Good luck finding a good boat.

Where are you based? You are more than welcome to borrow my 300 for a while to see if it's for you.

I'm based down in hampshire so it's quite a drive. Is there any advice you can give me about the boat? I'm concidering a couple on apollo duck with just the A rig. Would it be expensive to get the B rig and sail do you know?

Thanks

At 72kg and 6ft I would reccomend a B-rig.  I am about 2" shorter and 2 or 3 kg lighter and have a B.  Once you get used to the boat you should be fine with the extra sail area even when its breezy.  New masts are around 800 and sails 450ish so not really viable to have both rigs.

The 300 can be quite tippy (especially in the lighter stuff).  It does mean you need to develop a feel for the boat and do get wet at the start. That said, the rewards once you get it right are great.  The boat is so perfectly balanced and feels so responsive to the movements you put in.

With regards to buying boats, there is nothing specific to look for, general condition, the number of sails and condition on covers seem to dictate price.  The old boats are just as quite as the new ones.

Hope this helps

Bryn,
When looking I would not be too picky on condition of covers ,wheel bearings etc as the 300 is mostly a sellors market and the sellor knows they will shift the boat pretty quick. Obviously sails are a different matter but general if you pay more you will get more gear maybe two or three sails or a reroped boat  but always a better boat. Just do the usual checks on bearings, blocks, scratches, repairs, mast pot, goosneck, etc.

Thanks for the advice. I'm looking at one that seems to be in quite good condition with just a small leak around the rudder but I think it should be fairly easy to fix, but I will check around mast foot e.c.t. I'm just going to have to buy a 'B' rig for it at some point I think.

Thanks for your advice!

Hampshire. There are a couple of 300 fleets in Chichester Harbour - at Thorney Island & Bosham.

I'd suggest you get an RS100, or a Vareo.  Or a Devoti D-One, 700 or Musto Skiff.

Thats the biggest pile of crap I have heard on here for a long time TT.

Why would a boat that needs an extra sail and still get round a course slower (as per 3 of your examples) be better?

Bryan

Did you ever get a RS300? If so .... Did it deliver on your expectations?

Nick

Hello Nick, Yes I did get a 300 and yes it has lived up to my expectations. My one regret is that I'm not a bit bigger and heavier, as I struggle in any winds above 10 or so knots, upwind.

Any other questions please ask away...

Ah bless, isn't it sweet when you see someone who used to give a sh1t...

It looks to me like he was busying himself pimping asymmetric singlehanders of all persuasions there, and there was me thinking he was just an RS fanboy... he's probably wised up and is now aware such monumental shifts in what goes on at your average sailing club was never likely to happen in such an intransigent sport, well not in his lifetime anyway.

He's probably realised it's best to be a sheep and actually have someone to sail against in a proper race.  Besides you can always get better year on year as the competition relocates to the old folks home for palliative care.
