Is there anyone around the Cambridge area who has a Europe they would be prepared to let a friend of mine try? She is short and light and wants a responsive, affordable dinghy. A dinghy instructor, so your boat would be in safe hands!
Other considerations have been a streaker and a laser, but the former is expensive in grp and the latter is really a bit too big.
cheers,
Nessa

If she can get to Haversham (Milton Keynes), I'm sure there are people there who would let her try a Lightning, if she doesn't need a cvrda qualifying boat? I bought one coz it was cheap, plastic and I'm too small for a Laser.
If she'd like to, I'll try and find a contact.

Don't you love this forum, Nessa? You're asking a simple Yes / No question and, all of the sudden, you get loads of suggestions to try boats you're not looking for!
I'm not having a go, guys, I just find it amusing because it never fails.

I've tried the - being helpful route and answering the posters question, it doesn't seem to work on this forum, so I've decided that if you can't beat 'em, join 'em. And as my splash is FORSALE I thought I would selfishly plug it.

And so she should, a good one is a much nicer boat... but there in lies the problem. So few new ones make it to this country now that the fleet is gradually getting older and more worn out, and the good ones are hard to come by.
But having sailed a Byte with old and new rig on several occasions... and having owned 2 Europe's in the past I know which one I'd buy... again

The reason for asking about Europes was that they are cheapish and smaller than a Laser, so I can't see how making a suggestion about another boat that fits the bill (especially as Europes don't appear to be that cheap currently) is unhelpful.
If a Europe is what is wanted, fair enough. Nice boats, owned a couple over the years.
Yea gods, this forum would be boring if yes/no questions were answered with a yes or a no.

Have you contacted the Europe association? And just keep watching ebay and the free ads boat sites until one comes up, and take it for a test sail before buying, if possible.

Rupert, the class sec is actually at neighbouring Grafham, so I've suggested Rachie gets in touch and tries to wrangle a test sail. I know my Europe - can't even remember the sail number ended up down your way somehere...
Great little boat, but I always felt I was a bit too tall. Now I am just plain too fat....

Looking at the little pictures on the left there - there is always a British Moth

I did suggest a BM as a choice, especially as Hunts is anticipating a moth invasion for the winter (better than killer shrimp I suppose) but I think she is allergic to wooden boats . I don't suppose my lot set the best example...
edited to say that a quick glance at apollo duck shows two grp versions for sale...

Plenty of glass BMs around, though not necessarily for sale currently, of course. Trouble is, the old ones are heavy and the newer ones aren't old enough to be cheap. If condition doesn't matter, an old GRP BM is bulletproof!

if you sail on a small lake, its very hard to beat a british moth.
have seen 861 at the nationals, its a fast boat.
my wife has not looked back since she got one. she now wonders why she wasted so many years sailing a laser!

Thanks for all the advice. I tried a Europe at Grafham and loved it, job done.
I have found my boat to be passionate about and shock horror - it's a composite Europe! Well you can't help what you fall in love with...
