Subject: Sweet revision time
Date Posted: 20 Apr 05 at 9:48pm

I'm starting this thread to keep the "moaning about revision" bit out of more focused topics. Not everyone is revising, believe it or not!

This time of year, with the air getting warmer, the days longer, all the colours of spring bursting out, lovely cherry blossom snowing in the sunshine... ahhhh! it reminds me forever of the very pleasant winding path through a small garden at the back of one Uni building. It was the long and pleasant way to the library, where I had to shut myself in for days on end.... Yep, revisions... I've been there too and, trust me even if I sound boring, they're worth the hassle!!!!

ENJOY

I thought Id let you guys have an email on here too.

Why do we mess up exams?

A year has 365 days for you to study.

After taking away 52 Sundays, there are

only 313 days left.

There are 50 days in the summer that is

way too hot to work so there

are only 263 days left.

We sleep 8 hours a day, in a year, that

counts up to 122 days so now

we're left with 141 days.

If we fooled around for only 1 hour a

day, 15 days are gone, so we

are left with 126 days.

We spend 2 hours eating each day, 30

days are used in this way in

the year, and we are left with 96 days

in our year.

We spend 1 hour a day speaking to

friends and family, that takes

away 15 days more and we are left with

81 days.

Exams and tests take up at least 35

days in your year, hence you are

only left with 46 days.

Taking off approximately 40 days of

holidays, you are only left with

6 days.

Say you are sick for a minimum of 3

days, you're left with 3 days in

the year to study!

Let's say you only go out for 2 days!

You are left with 1 day!

But that 1 day is your birthday...

so...

GOOD LUCK to everyone on your exams.

um, 1 hour listening, 3 hour writing I think...
we do all our AS's with A2's (apart from music and
f maths) which is a REALLY STUPID system, so
thats why I have so many.

apparantly we have more teaching time this way and
we do better, but we'd all like fewer lessons, and so
would the teachers probably, so I don't get it...

Just found this thread, and I think I can top just about all of you .

This year is my fourth and final at uni, fairly important as if I fail any one module I fail my degree, no resits, no second chances, muck up here and its the last four years down the pan

So you will understand that I was a little miffed when half way through last term I was told that was not allowed to do one of my modules (it was mutually exclusive with another module I had done before christmas).  Now normally these things are explained in the documentation handed out at the start of the year but this particular 'clash' had been missed out so I had no way of knowing I was not meant to pick this combination.  The result of this was that I now had to find a new module to do, thing was that there were no other modules left with the same weighting that I could do this semester.

So now I'm doing one that is worth twice as many credits and my final mark will be averaged from a larger comined score.  This was ok (save for the fact that this was only decided a week before the easter break so I could only phisically go to a third of the lectures),  untill I discovered that the exam for this new module was at the same time as the exam for another of my modules.  And that according to the university computer system I had never been rgistered on either the module I was not allowed to do or the new one I now have to do (which was strange as I have written confirmation of my registration on both modules).

So I have spent the last week running around after various bits of central university administration trying to sort this out, while also trying to help write a 300 page report on the design of a marine research vessel I've been helping design.  Oh, and I've got to find a job for when I finish here in a month and a half.

All I can say is that I am soooo glad that the wednesday night series at south shields starts tomorrow and I can get my sailing fix twice a week.  The drinks at the end of all of this will be so sweet, that is the only thing keeping me going at the moment.

Good luck to everyone in exam hell now, remember, no matter how bad things are, there is always someone worse off than you!

P.S. if anyone is any good at finite element analysis and grillage problems please help, please, I don't have a clue, help me!!!!!!!

If you get as low as watching that, there's no hope for you mate... I thought sailors had a bit of class  Obviously not all of them

As for the use of English, you'll see there are plenty other members who live abroad and non-English natives (guytoon is French from Brittany, there are a couple of guys from Poland, even a few from the States and their English is rather good too!)

have found i have a major clash with 4 exams in 1 morning which means i have to be in isolation all day doing one after another -  being quiet for that long will brake me!

the trick is to learn stuff as its taught, it sounds blindingly obvious, but if you make a point of remembering stuff in lessons, revision becomes a simple case of jogging your memory rather than learning stuff from scratch.  I only learnt this once I got to university, I wish I'd listened to my teachers at school.

The only other tip I can give is not to do too much at once in the run up to an exam, you will burn yourself out, rather do a bit of each subject each day, save your energy, revision can be tiring.

Good luck one and all

It's also a matter of finding out what teachers want. Originality seldom pays.. especially in subjects you think it ought to pay, like English Lit or (in my days) Philosophy. Unfortunately, GCSEs are only there for you to show how well you've learnt tricks taught by others... Good for those who haven't got an opinion beyond "what's cool" and "we hate chavs"   (yeah, I kept well away from that one, please guys and girls, GROW UP!)

Basically, play the game by the rules - it might be a stupid game and you haven't been asked to agree on the rules, but everyone is in the game... You might as well win it!

bit late now by the sounds of it, but any of you ever used a 'spider diagram'? put a small box in the middle of an A4 page with the name of the main topic in it ... put 'legs' extending out from it to ovals about half way out from the centre, one oval for each sub-topic ... extend 'legs' from each oval and write short key notes above each (a few key words) ... include one leg for each thing you need to remember: a math formula, legal case names, aspects of Heathcliffe's character, anything ... use capitals, rather than lower case, they imprint better on the visual memory ... the first time you build a spider on a topic you can refer to study notes ... use capitals rather than lower case ... keep spiders on your worst topics by the loo, etc, for those quiet moments ... you can even listen to your MP3  good luck if you're still in the thick of exams!

Don't worry about it.  I met up with a crowd I used to go to school with 23 years ago through friends reunited.  the only thing we had in common is that we all went to the same school.  Really crap evening, none of them could drink properly and they all tried to impress each other with how big their mortgage is.  Mind you, managed to give one of them a good slap that had been due for about 24 years, so maybe it wasn't such a bad evening after all.

Another friend decided to drop the bombshell thats shes decided to move back to South Africa for uni, and I already have friends who have and are going to move to Aus and New Zealand.

And finnishing school is realy scary as I have never known another school since yr7  well the big wide world is out there.
