A trip to the consultant today reveals that I did indeed tear the cartilage in my wrist whilst trying to uncleat a jammed main the club Vision. The upshot is that my forearm will be in a splint - cast - another cast until about the end of June. Even worse, I am going to have to wear cardigans!
No sailing for me for a while then - presumably there will be physio too, once the casts are off.
So, given that my contender will be lying idle for most of the year, should I sell it (there is a shortage of second hand contenders) then buy another newer, prettier one - if I can find one - ready for the autumn/winter, thus not having to pay a berthing fee and doing the class a favour, or do I keep it to be on the safe side in case I can't get another one?
Or should I sue RS for the naff main cleat and simply get them to give me an RS100 for my pains..
------------- the same, but different...

| Nah, sell the contender, get well, get some nice attractive physiotherapist to massage it for you (I mean your wrist ) and then buy a Musto skiff.

Is there anyone you can lend the Contender to for the Summer who would then pay the berthing fee, and make use of the boat?

It depends on costs for berthing. I'd rpobably keep it if i have had it a while, or go with the others and sell and then buy a 700!

Never sell a boat you love!
Spend all the spare time working out controls that allow a one-armed person to hook on, steer and play sheet all at sme time...

Sell it. As you know people in the fleet you will always get the low down on new boats coming up for sale. Saves you on berthing, insurance and you don't have to worry about everything being weakened by prolonged storage.
Says he with an RS300 in the garage which has not been used since august!!!

Find someone who can make use of it and pay the bills while
you are incapacitated! ticks most of the box's, helps the
class, saves you money, gets looked after etc.
At the moment im at uni and get 5months off over the
summer. I want to try a new boat but cant justify buying
one as it will be sit unused for 7months, id be willing to
pay mooring, insurance and for any wear or tear. This sort
of arrangement makes sense for both parties, find someone
at your club in a similar situation.

Sell it. It might be a long time till you can support your weight on your wrist, and trapeezing can't be good for it???

Can you keep it at home in the interim, and avoid boat park/berthing fees?
Personally, unless you need the cash, I would keep it. I've been sailing the 'ball for the last few years, but held on to the Blaze 'just in case' - cos its a decent example, well sorted etc, probably only worth a couple of grand and yet they've been tough to get hold of 2nd hand. I'm now glad I did, as I'm likely to lose my crew to fatherhood later this year (anyone want a job at the slightly-less-blunt end.....?) so will probably be stepping back into the Blaze. omg, I'm gonna have to hike....

Lesson Learned - don't reeve the mainsheet through the cleat on the vision, we don't for teaching...
on the plus side - You'll be easy to spot at the dinghy show, hang around the bar with soppy eyes to pick up free drinks from forum members and the great news is cardi's are coming back into fashion.

Remeber Nessa you are going to need a decent boat for the Worlds at Weymouth in 2011. Is it worth taking the gamble that you will get a decent boat for then.
Of course you could have mine for a price and I could get another new Schappi. Do you like blue?
And if you could do something about the Euro rate to make the Schappi's more affordable.

I do have that very much in mind Mark. I do want to upgrade, but I don't want to be left without a boat for next year.

Remember, Mark, that I still read this forum even if I don't post any longer. If anyone in the family is due for a new boat, it should be me, don't you think?
