I have volunteered to update our Club's Sailing Instructions which are a little out of date! It's going OK but I am struggling a bit in relation to Advertising.

Our current SI's say that All advertising shall be restricted to Category A and indeed that is what Appendices J&K of the current RRS (as reproduced by Willis) suggest they should say. However, when I look at http://www.sailing.org/1999.php - ISAF Regulation 20 I cannot seem to see any reference to Appendix A, though the eyesight isn't what it was!

I need to check with the Club Committee but I guess if it has any say in the matter it would prefer not to have full on personal sponsorship advertsing but would not be averse to boats carrying event sponsorship advertising from open events that have been attended or will be attended in future.

So if it still exists can someone point me in the direction of Appendix A and/or confirm it gives us what I think we want or have we unwittingly been allowing full on sponsorship anyway!

Cat A-C no longer apply. http://www.sailing.org/tools/documents/RRS200912AppendsHK2010-8225.pdf - Here's the current Appendices H, J and K. Essentially, if you want to limit advertsing (sponsership) you have to specifically say what you're allowing.

Thing is, by limiting advertising you may be forcing anyone at your club that does a lot of traveler events to have a spare set of "clean" sailsfor club racing, and may run into problems with campaigners hulls. On circuits personal sponsership is now pretty prevalent.

Presumably then if there is no reference to advertising in the SIs then anything goes? Currently I think the likelihood of anyone attracting sponsorship at our club is pretty remote.

Rather than trying to be prescriptive, it might be easier to delete the reference from the SIs altogether go with the flow and see what happens.

If you do not restrict advertising that does not mean "anything goes". The relevant text is:

20.3 Competitors & Boats
20.3.1 Subject to any other provision of this Code:
ISAF REGULATIONS
65
20.3.1.1 each individual Competitor may, with the agreement of the Person in Charge, display
Advertising on clothing and personal equipment without restriction;
20.3.1.2 Advertising chosen by the Person in Charge may be displayed on hulls, spars and sails
without restriction except on the spaces reserved for identification by Appendix G of the
Racing Rules and under Regulations 20.5 & 20.9.

Restricting adverising is possible, but somewhat complicated and the ISAF texts are, IMHO, opinion confirmed by a member of an ISAF and a member of the legal profession, somewhat poorly drafted. One is supposed to know what they mean, even though the words of the text do not seem to say exactly the same thing.

Probably easiest to not restrict advertising. Some boats will not be allowed to carry advertising because their class rule restrict it.
