What do dinghy sailers who wear contact lenses do? I figure it's not possible to wear them cos you'll lose them as soon as you capsize? I've had a pair of prescription sunglasses made up, but I'd obviously prefer not to have the worry of losing them (very expensive!). If I do lose them, I can't see past my nose! Wondering if any other dinghy racers have had this problem and if anyone has any solutions? Many thanks xx

I wear prescription glasses and sunglasses and, when I go sailing, I wear one of those glasses straps. I used to wear contacts but I've always been so worried about losing them that I've never even tried to wear them while sailing. times and I've never lost my glasses. Thank goodness for that! I wouldn't be able to see the shore without them!

| I wear contacts when I sail - there really isn't anything to worry about. I've capsized in them plenty of times (quiet Clifford!) without losing a lens. I have lost two lenses (over eight years or so) in sailing related incidents - one washed out of my eye sailing in huge waves and another got knocked out of my eye when I was derigging a boat and the clew of the sail flapped and hit me in the eye. I've lost track of the number of pairs of sunglasses I've lost or damaged though! |

I sometimes sail with contacts in and i put my normal cheap non perscription sunglasses over the stop but i think the best lenses for sailing are daily disposables like i have because if you do loose them, so what go and get another pair out of the box they give you! ------------- -[Franko]- Chew Valley Lake Sailing Club RS600 933 |

I use an old pair of specs with clip-on sunglasses. They're just two shaded lenses the same shape as the glasses, with four hooks round the edge and a bendy bit of metal between (if that makes any sense at all...) Coupled with one of the neoprene-style glasses straps (not string) the only problem i've ever had is losing a lense getting boomed in a topper. ------------- www.fastsail.org Fireball GBR 9476 |

I too wear my lenses when sailing and so far no problems. Sometimes
when I get a face full of water the lenses feel a little odd, if you
don't panic and start rubbing your eyes, the lenses will settle
down. I have been water skiing in mine and fell in! - still
no problems, just try not to screw your eyes up when you hit the water,
stay relaxed about them and let then settle. I always have spare ones
with me though, as I am sure one day I will loose one or both!!
Some of it is, being confident about wearing them in the first
place. PS. I also swim in mine and if I dive underwater I am happy to open my eyes though i'm not sure if this is recomended by the manufactures!! but it was my way of gaining confidence. At first I was horrified at the thought of contact lenses in my eyes.  But they are fab now  |

Ive started wearing contacts for sailing and not lost one yet. If you have disposables its not such a big deal anyway if you loose one. Big bonus is it means you can get cheap sunnys for sailing and not stress if you loose them ------------- ...yesterday I couldnt spell enginner...now I are one!...... |

I'm a complete convert to sailing in contact lenes. I'm not very short sighted (unlike the helm) so I used to think I could cope without them. Earlier this year the helm lost his glasses during a spectacular 'upside-down on trapeze' capsize & we both got contacts (thanks to Headfry who recommended them We've got daily disposable ones and they are fantastic. We haven't lost any yet and they don't get uncomfortable even after a day in the salty spray. Much better than worrying about crashing into the forestay and smashing your specs. ------------- Fly Cherub! |

I wear Acuview 1 a Day contact lens all the time when I sail. And I have
never lost any, and I sail a Cherub you get wet at speed quite a lot ( ask Lucy! ). I got feed up of wearing glasses with all the spray i couldn't see anything. It got to the point where I might as well not bother with glasses the quaility of vision was about the same! my crew rich wears contacts all the time when sailing and has never had a problem with them though when its windy he has been known to put a pair of goggles on so he can see through the spray coming off our bow ------------- |

lol a pair of goggles- would be intersting to see that 1. i should imajine wearing contacts whilst sailing makes eye stuff alot cheaper. coz like prescription glasses r soo expensive therfore u can buy a chepaer pair. contact lenses allways look really uncomfortable to me tho and the fact that u have to like poke urself in the eye  ------------- byte me!- GBR 814 |

Oh I forgot to mention the expensive glasses bit. I used to have a pair of
prescription Bolé interchangerable lens glasses that I used for sailing, untill the mainsheet flicked up off a wave and lassooed them off my face. I also wear contact lenses for ages while sailing. No matter with them. I remember once just sit down on my dagger board while waiting the lense to come back in the middle of my eye. I wouldn't even make difference between my crew and a pinguin without them. On the contrary, last sunday I went sailing with my prescription glasses and was worried all the day long to get the boom in the head or whatever...
