Because poor little Steve Cockerill might cry if he found out what people really thought.
(edited in): I'm sure one pair of socks hasnt changed the course of the entire Oppie Nationals. There is just NO need for him to post an advert, in a "news" section, effectively claiming that some Rooster Hot Socks could change the results of an event on this scale!

Thats a bit harsh mate! I just dont agree with his advertising tackticks! They dont even sponsor the Oppy Worlds but yet the PR has jumped on the back of the event and it makes it sound like Rooster are sponsors! As i said in my original comment (before it was deleted) Shameless

Whilst I've been a very harsh critic in the past, I see no harm in this ad. I'm sorry, but tis is legitmitate advertorial. At least he's not promoting some disproved quack medical treatment this time. He might have a poor understanding of your average net geek, but leave him be this time.

But why post "Smiles Return to Optimist nationals" I genuinely clicked on that expecting to read about the oppy nationals sponsored by Rooster, instead i get some Guff about his wet socks. I have no problem with press releases or even reading about when a company has sponsored an event. But why post a misleading title, just to shamelessly plug a pair of freaking wet suit socks! We don't even know if the story is real, it is after all August and i for one have been sweating my B'locks off all day!

yeah but no but yeah but no
there's a whole load of 'advertorials' dressed up as stories on here - it's one of the packages offered to advertisers where they get x number of advertorials a month. You can spot them in the headline a mile away - e.g great win for random sails at the tupperware 16 nationals. The give away if you can't spot if from the headline is the little icon - if it's advertorial then it's got the manufactureres / suppliers logo on it. The fact that it's got a big rooster on it and immediately above there's a story with a piccy of the oppy and 'oppy nationals day 5' makes it obvious for all readers - well apart from you lot that it's a cockerill advertorial
Are they interesting - yes sometimes as you hear about new products that way - do you have to click on them all - no!!

Merlinboy "I just dont agree with his advertising tackticks!" - nice play on words.
I personally find the wet socks to be a marvellous product & liked them so much that I now have 3 sets,Along with hot tops,Aqua fleezes, winter gloves,Race skin,2 sets of hiking boots, hiking shorts & a 8.1.
Do you think thats too much?
I`m not sure.

Hi Russ
We've been through this countless times before.
All articles posted from commercial partners / our advertisers are advertorials - they're clearly marked as such and if you don't want to read it, then don't!
At no point does the article suggest Rooster are a sponsor of the Opi nationals and at no point does the article suggest a pair of hot socks changed the course of the Opi nationals - just returned the smile to a kids face!
We have to be extremely thankful to our advertisers here - without them the site simply wouldn't exist.

Mark that is absolute nonsense! Mat i just point out that i actually rate Rooster products, i own an aqua fleece, some of those socks, a bloody good carbon tiller extension etc. etc. Whilst i fully appreciate that the magazine needs advertisers to support it (Believe it or not i do work in a fairly senior position at a major company and fully understand your needs). The title "Smiles Return to the Optimist Nationals" Sounds to me like its a heart felt story where Rooster have managed to arrange replacement for some stolen boats or gear! Not just that some made up kid had cold feet at the nationals and then magically found hot socks!
Contra to these postings i actually like reading the latest success stores from the different chandlers, builders, sail makers and clothing manufacturers. But they also post in a dignified way, not one that i feels misleads!
Agree or disagree with me it obviously doesn't matter hence why all the comments that have been posted have been deleted twice! Its obvious that the advertisers are more important then the readers, all i can say that out f 5 people that article has only been given two stars and i wonder who gave it the high score??

Er, it does have a comment box but no-one ever seems to comment,
wouldn't a snappy comeback posted after the article do the job?
Or would that get deleted if it was derogatory.
It shouldn't, anyone worth their salt and using viral internet style
advertising should expect a bit of contorversy. Indeed it's not unknown in
the kite game to post something totally outrageously negative about ones
own products and watch the come back. Reverse advertorial promoting
positive response..
Better that than nothing.
Without any comments it looks like no-one reads the stuff. (I don't
anyway, in fact this is an exact example, had MB not ranted I'd never have
clicked myself.. now I guess I must rush straight out and buy a pair of hot
sox..

GRumpf thats probably why I'm so mad! I made a comment about the article and twice it was deleted! It was only slightly derogatory as well, it was just one word "Shameless"
P.S. Grumpf i would actually get some hot sox's if i were you they are bloody good in the winter, also with a man of your advancing years, they would also keep your feet warm on those cold winter nights at Bingo!

I have to say I agree with Grumpfs - I shouldn't have deleted the 'Shameless' comment - and I have now reinstated it. Ross was entitled to his opinion and I was wrong to delete it. Sorry Russ!
Edited to change spelling of Ross to Russ - thanks turnturtle!

Accepted Mark, but please call me Russ!!
Interestingly enough its now down to 1 star!! The best thing about my rant is the amount its got us talking about Rooster!
Can i just reiterate again my rant was not about sl*gging off Y&Y or Rooster far from it in fact, it was a rant at the shameless techniques that Rooster use to create press releases and the moderating of my comments! I am i can assure you a customer of both of the above businesses.
Now i'm back off on the internet to search for pictures of Dr Gillian Mckeith!

So, now everyone's calmed down a bit... Mark, could I make a suggestion? Could you perhaps add to the guidelines you presumably give people for news items that if they're promoting an event, it would be good to include the date in the body text? Many seem to just include it in the sub-headline, which isn't particularly obvious. The "fastsail" symmetric GP announcement currently on the front page is a case in point, there was another recently from someone else as well.

A more difficult suggestion this time (as the previous)should be a tiny bit of work) would be for the first comment posted to an article to form a new forum thread, in a dedicated section, with a link to the original article, rather than as now the comments really being rather neglected.

Yeah, I have been thinking about how to arrange this for a while now.

I agree that this would be a much better arrangement
because then comments would come to the attention of forum
users as well as those who happen to be looking at a
specific report

Given your evolutionary limitations it makes complete sense to maximise the use you can get from your prehensile toes

At least I'm limited to just the five we south coasters seem to sport.
I just dont know what I'd do with that sixth appendage you Whitstable folk all seem
to enjoy.

I've got most of ten, minus the chunk of one big toe I seem to have managed to gouge out on the way home from drinking last night- woke up with a toe caked in blood. Nice.
