Piecing together a couple of different bits of reporting, it sounds like it was Shirley & Ishares who rather unfortunately collided with a wayward punter rib and broke VX40 and the rib..

"Team iShares have a broken gennaker pole and superficial damage to their bow after a collision and had to sit out all of today’s racing"

"
In the first race of the afternoon one of the Xtreme 40s was involved in a collision with a private spectator RIB. An official statement issued from OC Events (organisers of the iShares Cup) said that one of the passengers on the RIB, Mrs Dorothy Haslam, required medical treatment. She received immediate, preliminary first aid assistance on the water before being transferred to shore and admitted to Newport Hospital"

Anyone on the ground got any hands-on news or photos??

Hmmm, I doubt the publicists are going to release such details!

I doubt it too. If you read the reports it ( http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/hampshire/8180804.stm - BBC report here ) would appear that the RIB in questions was:

1) NOT part of the 'official' fleet

2) On the racecourse at the time of the incident

With those 2 facts in mind surely the driver of said RIB will have some questions to answer, not leat why the hell was he where he was (common sense says don't go near those things when they are racing not to mention IRCPS).

True but there's bound to be some unofficial photos floating around, and whilst it's a slow news month I'm surprised on of the tabs hasn't picked it up.

We all know and understand that the Rib was in the wrong place at the wrong time - a bit like that guy that run out on to the track during the http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/3081905.stm - British GP a few years ago. Certainly watching the video on the ishares website from Sunday shows how hard the bear aways are - but for the popular press it's got all the makings of a story...

Given the beebs' and http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/othersports/sailing/5961650/Dee-Caffari-thrown-overboard-in-boat-collision-at-Cowes-Week.html - the telegraph's picked it up then it'll be interesting to see further reportage.

Was there....saw the crash.....spectator RIB far too close to competitors, shirley ran the RIB over, not her fault, and she burst the tube/wrote off the RIB.....they hung around for a bit, outside the race area, and then realised they couldn't compete, so mainsail down, and sailed in for the day.......amazing viewing of the VX40s on the Cowes shoreline, if you get a chance, a must see for anyone!
