There doesn't seem to be a suitable place for this post,
so sorry if it's in the wrong place.

Basically, I'm moving to Leeds in October. I sail a Laser
4k, and looking for:
a) somewhere suitable to sail it
b) a crew.

The only place I've been able to come up with so far is
the Yorkshire Dales Sailing Club, although it's a fair
distance from Leeds. I wouldn't mind too much traveling
to the coast if that is my best option.

Any ideas?

Use the Y&Y club search facility with a handy map.

Geographically, the nearest ones to Leeds (in no particular order) are;

Denholme SC, Yeadon SC, Otley SC, West Riding SC,

and Scammonden Water SC (Nr Huddersfield).

If you can find the Club links / news articles or websites, that may give you an idea of the facilities and types of boats sailed. I'm afraid I have never sailed at any of the aformentioned, so can only leave recommendations, or alternative suggestions to others. Depends whether or not you are looking for other 4k's to race against, or what else matters to you? I would guess Scammonden would be an easy trip from Leeds South West if weekend sailing, but don't know whether the motorway link v rush hour, might be an issue if you wanted to sail weekday evenings. I guess your hint at 'wouldn't mind travelling to the coast' suggests more of a weekend sailing?

West Riding is where Leeds Uni sail at.

Thanks for the suggestions. I know West Kirby reasonably
well having graduated from Newcastle last summer and sailed
there as part of the Halloween Howler. I would sign up with
them quickly, I've always liked the club, but it's far too
small for a L4k.

Denholme and Scammonden look interesting. Will have to have
a reccy at some point.

Do you get occasional tin bath crewed by octogenarians as well?

(comment sponsored by the department of location-specific "northern" stereotypes)

I think there are Solo fleets everywhere: its one of the Country's most popular classes [grins, ducks, runs]

We certainly used to - the lake was used by the BBC for a lot of the outdoor scenes of Summer Wine, including the afore-mentioned tin-bath scenes!

Denholme SC is very friendly but the water is smallish and there are no Laser 4Ks in the club at the moment.  Scammonden is very windy so the racing is exciting and has quite a big water.  It's also just off the M62 so very easy to get to by car.

If you go oto our website [ yorkshiredales.sc ] you will see the size of our water will suit your 4k . We have 2 or 3 other 4k sailing regularly. Depending on where in Leeds you live ,it's about a 45 minute drive ....well worth it to get out in the Yorkshire Dales. Even better we have just completed our new £700k clubhouse which will be open early September. ...no joining fee / no duty category/ dual club membership /day sailing/ underfloor heating/ mega viewing terrace etc. Its worth a trip up over the hols.

No question it has to be Yorkshire Dales.

All the alternatives are fine freindly clubs, and have their good points but:- Denholme / Yeadon / Otley are far too small. Scammonden is just about big enough but very unstable winds due to steep hills all around and motorway embankment. I think Hollingworth has a restricted classes policy. West Riding is my favourite of the others mentioned, but it's a bit small for a L4k - and shallow - ok if you never capsize - but if you do, expect a black sludge over half your sail (its an old coal pit or summat). West Kirby is twice as far as Yorkshire Dales.

Yorkshire Dales is on the biggest lake / Reservoir in Yorkshire, it has asymmetric fleets and courses to suit. There are a few L4000s as well as RS800s, AsyVortex (lots), 49ers RS200s Buzz ISO etc.

There are also good fleets of Lasers (11 racing last Sunday) and others so we're not just a 'blasting' club. The new £700,000 clubhouse is 'state of the art', but fees are low and no entry fee (yet).

Best move would be to come and see it - compare it to the alternatives and then decide. We even have a windward-leeward open especially for you on 13th September - so come along and try the water / facilities.

Yes James, we have at least 2 Windward / Leeward opens a year as well as class specific opens for VortexAsymmetric and RS200 (often Fat Face / National series).

We also run the Grimwith Grapple and Brass Monkey events (the latter is free entry!!) which usually have a mix of W/L and Triangle or trapezoidal (think Tiger trophy)  type courses to try even it out across the mixed classes. Finally we have an 'Equaliser' event. See http://www.yorkshiredales.sc/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=22&Itemid=56 - HERE for diary of open events.

We often attract several Asymmetrics to our winter series (from Rs200s to 49ers), but try to provide courses that cater to all - especially as we have growing fleets of Lasers, Toppers and other non asy boats. We seperate out results from the bigger classes and will probably be having more class starts next season.

The place is alive with activity at the moment - last weekend we had upwards of 20 kids on a learn to race course - and have started a kids race training club on Sunday mornings to cater for that interest.

A year ago we had 1 or 2 active laser sailors now there are loads of them - with turnouts of 10+. I could go on but its pretty obvious where my loyalty lies so I'll let others judge rather than rambling on.

Thanks everyone. I think I'm going to go with YDSC,
assuming they'll have me.

Good decision.

If you're around at the weekend come and say hello (I'm keith - the bloke sailing a 29er with his daughter). If you're there on Saturday I'll be pretty busy as we're having a celebration party for the new clubhouse with over 200 coming at last count, and I'm helping set it up. Sunday is the Windward-Leeward open so you'd be welcome to sail in that - as are all forumites.
