For those that watched Top Gear yesterday, was the Stig really Michael Schumacher or was it a publicity stunt!

He just happened to be there cos he's the only one who ferrari will let drive their FXX so top gear got a little bit of publicity out of it i think.
------------- 600 732, will call it Sticks and Stones when i get round to it.
Also International 14, 1318

And I'm a car hating, water hating vegan....
True, he could be one of the stigs. Aka the stig who drove the FXX... so pretty... me wants. But I very much doubt he's one of the main stigs. The smart money is on Ben Collins as the main, everyday stig.

Perry Macarthy was the stig for the first 4 series, except for a couple of occasisons when it was Julian Bailey - those under 30 will now be going who? those who paid attention to motoracing in the 80's will know who these guys are - BTW Perry Macarthy's book "Flat Out/Flat Broke" is a very good read about his struggles to get into F1 and trying to be a racing driver when you don't have any dough, or unless a nice man (let's call him "Mr R Dennis" for this example) decides to sponsor you on the sly for many a year to see if you can make it one day!
------------- Feeling sorry for vegans since it became the latest fad to claim you are one

Lewis was never sponsored on the sly though, it was never a secret. If you were in Karting circles (when Lewis first got the sponsorship) you knew. I believe there was even an article on Look East (for those who live in East Anglia) when Lewis was 15 about the 'up and coming' star. Why was it on Look East I hear you cry....he is from Stevenage..
Having done some motorsport at an amateur level it is quite expensive, much more so than saiiling. Sponsorship would definitely make a difference!

It could be that Ferrari would only let him drive it at speed, hence the reason he was the "Stig"

I'm with you on that one, I very much doubt he has been in the white uniform before, certainly not early on while he was still racing for Ferrari, did make great TV though, especially when Jezza asked him about bumping into Damon

Jeez it might be quick but i thought it was one of the most ugly cars I have ever seen Also I'm not sure it should be allowed on the wall at all. Speed bump test anyone?

I saw there was someone dressed as The Stig at the GP I think in one of the pits.
Didn't see Top Gear so I'll have to find a repeat.

Agreed. What a phenomenal car + driver.
Was a little suprised that he didn't do a lap in 'the reasonably priced car' to be judged against his F1 contemporaries. I guess that isn't covered in his Ferrari PR contract.

There was nothing sly about Lewis's sponsorship by Mclaren.
As an avid Autosport reader back in my uni days, there were regularly articles featuring a young karter called lewis whos kart was silver and whos overalls bore a mclaren emblem. All the articles clearly identified that Ron Dennis had spotted this young star (then 12) and wanted to nurture him towards F1.
As for the stig being Schumacer, I'd agree with the rest of you. Its only because he's the only person who they would let throw it around a track outside of Modena. The normal stig is almost definately a lesser known driver, could even be Johnny Herbert!!!!

There is more than one "white Stig". If you watch carefully, he gets fatter some weeks!
As for MS, I've been told it was his FXX and that he HAS done a lap in the RPC.

Yes, I thought that too! I suppose the cachet of getting
Schumacher on the show makes for a bending of the rules.

It was damn good telly and that car was fast! Have to admit I had no idea what that Bacardi publicity clip was supposed to represent and why they were showing it on the BBC!

Definately not the regular Stig, Shoemaker is several inches shorter and quite a bit chubbier. I agree with those who have said he was probably just the only one allowed to drive the FXX, is it a coincidence that he is employed by Ferrari?

The car which Schuey was driving was his OWN PERSONAL FXX. Apparently the only black one ever produced. I don't see that there is a problem with him doing a bit of Ferrari PR, its not like when Hamilton went on the show he didn't mention Mercedes every other sentence! It's quite obvious that Schuey isn't actually the stig, I think they made that pretty clear with the whole getting lost thing on the track! Good to get him on there anyway, he is a driving legend.

He didn't act the stig very well either, the way he walked and the fact that he showed expression when shaking his head. You could tell that this wasnt the usual stig... still good tv though!
I also doubt that the bbc could afford to have the MS as the stig very easily!
Is this the end of the reasonably priced car too? The way he drove it made me think there may be a new one next week, just a thought...

Definitely not the stig, in this interview he talks about learning the track, which if he was the stig he wouldn't need to do
http://www.topgear.com/uk/videos/schuey-in-the-FXX - http://www.topgear.com/uk/videos/schuey-in-the-FXX
As for the fxx being eligible for the power laps, I reckon it shouldn't be on there, as Ferrari keep it and only let you drive it a circuits, also looks as though it wouldn't get over a policemans flip flop!
edit:forgot to add the link, ooops!

The FXX shouldnt be on the leader board in reality, they kicked off the DBR9 because it wasnt a road car and that went round in 1:08 so is actually faster! The FXX is no more of a road car than this and was slower too...
That brings me back to the question of whether MS is the stig, the DBR9 is probably a slower car than the FXX but because MS was not used to the track when driving the FXX he didnt post a time as quick as the usual stig did in the aston, i think

He was, but only for the FXX. There have been, and will be, many stigs. Even the top gear team point out that the stig's height and weight rather fluctuate... That's before you even begin to take into account the Stigs in things such as the cross-london challenge (when he went by underground)

I'm pretty sure the people you see in the stig suit out of the car are not the person(people?) you see in the stig suit doing power laps. I find it hard to believe the real stig(s) would have done the cross london challenge etc. could have been anyone from the production team.

Although I have to say the thought of 'Herman the German' as my sister refers to him mixing it with the great unwashed in a race suit and sweaty full face helmet on the underground is mildly amusing.....
