Shearwater 1994 - It would definetly be a good idea to post a stolen
notice around any shearwater links you can find (i.e. the association
website?) as if the thief had any idea what the kit is for i am certain
he will try and sell it to a shearwater sailor!
Also check on ebay for shearwater parts as they may well try and flog em online!
Sorry to hear about your stolen kit! Im also in the queue for the leg breaking!!

If you find some of your stolen kit for sale on ebay (e.g. the trailer)
try and determine that its definetly yours and then email the ebay
administrators and ask for his ip address to be blocked and any details
they may have - e.g. name, address to be sent to you, however the details may be faked
(likely if theyre floggin stolen goods )
If this is the case then you can find out the location of the machine
according to its i.p. address but i dont think this is legal and thus
the ebay admin are unlikely to do it!!
If it is sold on ebay your best chance of retrieving it would be to
contact the buyer who is most likely to be innocent to the fact its
stolen!

Yeah Shearwater 1994 we have had a few problems at clubs near Burnham, Did you hear about all the oppies that were burnt, by local youths.
I would put a notice at our club but i realy dont hink that it would do anything as we dont live that near burnham and the boats arent likely to be able to be sailed at our club.

Reading your posts makes me feel sad.
I grew up in that area, and boats could be left just about anywhere,
with all the gear on them, nothing seemed to go missing,
lordy, I sound like me Dad now!! but it is heart breaking when
the odd few spoil our fun. Sailing relies on a certain amount of trust
and this sort of thing angers me.
My father sailed at Brandy Hole and I sailed at Little Wakering Yatch Club.
Have very fond memories of Burnham Week.
I hope you are able to track down your gear Shearwater1994

Yeh burnham area has gone down hill a little the sailing is still the same standard but at Corinthian (the top yacht club in the town - price wise) the oppies got burnt, further up river, our yacht got sabotaged, and a couple of waterfornt houses got trashed, but mostly its a good sport and things dont normaly go wrong on a grand scale.
we can come up with times when things have gone wrong, but these are such small number of occasions compared to thetotal number of times people have left boats/things about.

Last time I coached (29ers) at Leigh and Lowton someone had their wallet, phone, car keys and (as a result) their subaru impreza turbo stolen, I did say in the briefing about looking after your valueables... Also last year I was coaching (Lasers) at Datchet and someone had their brand new Audi TT stolen less than 24 hours after they had bought it ... so please do not leave keys in the changing rooms!

Make sure your Insurance Company adds the theft to http://www.stolenboats.org.uk - http://www.stolenboats.org.uk
This is usually the best way of ensuring that all the police marine divisions, retailers and the public get to know about thefts.

We've had it pretty bad at our club mainly with scallies, it started 2 years ago when they came up and we was told there was around 20 people that chucked boats in the lake broke into a hut and sank a few oppies and windsurf boards.
Next we had a laser chucked in and burnt,
Followed by a club topper chucked in and burnt was fun towing a molten topper though?
The most expensive was a nearly new laser 2000 on bonfire night thrown in the lake and set on fire totally rote of.
This weekend tried to get away from the worries of that club and went up to Coniston only to find that some people had dragged my laser of a multi stacker and chucked it in the lake with no bung in luckily they was staying on the camp and now have all been arrested.
Btw anyone no any laser repairer that charges nice and high and is really good
Cheers

yeah we had someone very cleverly try to sink one of our dorys by taking an axe to its hull, then pushing it onto the lake. It didnt work very well but did cost us a bit to repair.

were allways fighting with the fisherman at our lake, so they keep changing the padlocks to our dinghy compound, occasionaly people steal canoes and kyacks oh and oppies but always leave them in the lake half sunk, our pathetic dory can hardly pull its self never mind a opiie full of water,

The Laser 2000 that you see was stolen and recovered on the same day, was an interesting case involving the boat being advertised on Ebay without the owner's knowledge. To cut a long story short, someone saw the advert, contacted the Class Association who in turn, contacted the owner who was able to take action to get the boat back again.
At the same time, we were contacted by a potential purchaser, who thought the deal looked too good to be true. We were also able to contact the legitimate owner, and forewarn the buyer not to transfer the money.
An excellent case for belonging to your Class Association and also for checking out a boat's history, before you part with your hard-earned cash.

We are pleased with the response the site has received, from the marine trade, and the support of Yachts and Yachting, but most importantly, sailors in general, in reporting tip-offs to us and colleagues at other insurance companies.
It is only by working together that we can combat theft. I just wish that there was more we could do to fight the mindless idiots who cause the vandalism described earlier in this thread.

I can't see that your insurance company have added the stolen equipment to http://www.stolenboats.org.uk - http://www.stolenboats.org.uk which would be the best way of getting some action from the police and notifying other sailors to keep an eye out for you.
They should already know how to add the equipment to the site, but if they are unsure, tell them to get in touch with me. If I can do anything else to help then feel free to get in touch too.
