All I am thinking of buying a solo off a mate of mine who has has a baby and has neglected his solo for a while. It basically needs the gunnels re-attaching in a few places and a varnish and a paint on the bottom.

I live in Tewkesbury Gloucestershire does anyone know of a boat builder/repairer near me that might want a go at repairing this solo. Photos are available and I have cash waiting to do the job.

I can't imagine, though, that it will be remotely cost effective to buy the boat from your mate and get it professionally repaired compared to buying a boat from someone else that doesn't need the work done. Good professional work is, rightly, fairly expensive, especially compared to the cost of older secondhand boats.

Of course if you have your own garage and fancy doing it yourself that would be quite another matter. Sounds like a reasonably candidate for that, although the one word of warning is that there's always about twice as much work to do than you expact at first sight when it comes to neglected wood boats.
